Her Rules Radio (general)

There are many challenges to being a creative person. I’ve experienced many of those challenges, and we’ve discussed many of them here on the show. Today’s show will inspire us to make it through a crisis situation to thrive in your craft. In addition, we’ll be taking a sabbatical of sorts after today’s show, but Her Rules Radio will be back soon with more interesting guests and perspectives.

Christine Dixon is an actress whom I met on Instagram. Since then, we’ve had many email and video conversations, and I knew that her story was one that my listeners needed to hear. Her experiences bring up many themes around the obstacles that creative thinkers face in putting their work and ideas out into the world. Chris has been performing her one-woman show, Harriet Tubman, for years. She has incredible stories about the challenges she’s overcome to deliver this performance. It’s a combination of education and entertainment that brings empowerment to each audience. Chris shares with us how she faced the fear of failure and rejection and learned to adapt to tough situations. She demonstrates how to think positively and proactively while reaching out for help when it’s needed. She shares how we can keep moving forward, so we live with no regrets. I hope you’re inspired to help support Chris and her amazing work. Her story is a beautiful ribbon as we wrap up the package that is this season of Her Rules Radio.

Nancy Levin has written a new book, Setting Boundaries Will Set You Free, and she’s busted a lot of myths around setting boundaries. We’re discussing the nitty-gritty of boundary setting, and Nancy is sharing truth bombs to revolutionize your life and your relationships.

#1 - 9 to 5: 1980, Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda Dolly Parton

(take out the boss, become the boss, change the system from the inside)

  1. Don’t assume the gorgeous girl is a slut, no matter what the guys are saying about her
  2. If you want to tell a story, you may have to write it yourself… Jane Fonda came up with the idea, then she asked Dolly to come on and Dolly wrote that iconic song for the movie - In fact, Dolly would only be IN the movie if she could write the thems song! (which was SUPER smart - she keeps the IP/Song Writing credits, she owns the songs, the profits, forever.)

#2 - Working Girl: 1988 Melanie Grifith, Harrison Ford, Sigornie Weaver, dress for the job you want, go for the job you’re not “qualified” for, creative thinking (crashes the wedding to pitch her idea to the father of the bride) - Shipping Co President/painting

  1. If you want to grow, find someone to copy (a mentor)
  2.  Just do you - Tess is defined by her unflinching independence throughout Working Girl. "I'm not going to spend the rest of my life working my ass off and getting nowhere just because I followed rules that I had nothing to do with setting up,” she says, marking her refusal to bend to societal gender norms.

#3 - Baby Boom - leave corporate, follow your dream, leave everything behind, ditch the lame partner holding you back, create your own business, work on your own terms

  1. Sometimes it’s about taking a leap of faith. Quitting a good job with a high salary to move to the country seems like the worst idea ever to some, but “with great risk comes great reward.” (J.C. didn’t say that. Thomas Jefferson did. But J.C. could have.)
  2. You have to thrive where you’re planted, instead of whining about the garden. Sure, J.C. made a mistake in purchasing a lemon of a house. But, she makes it past the frozen well and leaky roof, and she leverages her apple orchard into a successful business to support her child.
  3. Motherhood is hard. It’s no picnic. And you can lose yourself a little, but that doesn’t mean you’re lost forever. It just means you have to adapt and figure out who you are now. And if you go from “Tiger Lady” to country mama and grassroots entrepreneur, that’s more than OK. It’s freaking awesome.

#4: Dirty Dancing - stand up for what you believe in, learn to dance, fall in love with the “wrong guy not good on paper, who is actually a good guy, hard worker, moral, etc.

  1. Have the confidence to be yourself - ‘Nobody puts Baby in the corner,’ is by far the most famous quote to make it out of Dirty Dancing, and for a very good reason. Dance lessons aside, Johnny has the knack of bringing the best out of Baby, whether she’s risking it all to ask her dad for help or getting up on the stage in front of hundreds.
  2. Trust your instincts - Robbie, the medical student, might appear to be the best catch in Kellerman’s, but it's Johnny, Penny and Billy who turn out to be the good guys. As we all know, Robbie gets Penny pregnant and leaves Baby’s father to unknowingly come to the rescue. 'Now, you’ll hurt me if you don’t trust me, all right?' Johnny nails it.
  3. Rules are made to be broken - Sometimes the rules are made to be broken, as demonstrated by Johnny at the end, who despite being fired, returns to Kellerman’s to do the final dance, including that illicit lift.

#5 - Breakfast Club: talk about the dark stuff with people, find weirdos who believe in something, listen to each other - you have more in common than you may think on the surface

  1. John Hughes 1985 classic, The Breakfast Club made stars of Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Emilio Estevez and has become beloved by people all over the world. The story of five kids trapped in Saturday detention is widely regarded as one of the greatest coming of age stories of all time and has taught lessons that are relevant to people of all ages.
  2. To ask the important questions in life.
  3. To be proud of your talents.
  4. No one's home life is perfect.
  5. Never underestimate the power of a dance break.
  6. Growing up sucks.
  7. People aren't always what they seem.
  8. Sometimes breaking the rules has its rewards.
  9. To step out of your comfort zone every once in a while.
  10. Everyone has feelings.
  11. Opposites attract.
  12. Sometimes you end up exactly where you need to be...even if it's Saturday detention

#6 - Pretty In Pink:

  1. Pretty In Pink is a story of class, humor, and love.
  2. Andie, played by Molly Ringwald, isn’t your typical high school girl. She’s quirky, independent and has her own unique sense of style, one not dictated by name brand clothes. She made the most of what she had.
  3. It resonates with me I think because I relate to feeling like the “poor girl” too, kind of being her actually. A lot of the people I spent time around in junior high and high school were upper middle class I remember, or middle class-plus. Some weren’t, but most were. So I found a character I could relate to who didn’t wear a mask when I did.
  4. like Andie, I grew up in a single parent home, too, from the age of about 11-18. Even though I saw my dad regularly, my mom like Andie’s dad had some mental health issues and was a traumatized human. I didn’t understand it until years later, but I, like Andie, funneled my energies into my job to save money for college (and vintage clothes!), and to be out of the house, which was a depressing place to be.
  5. Accept you’re different and unique: Andie, when sent to the principal’s office for teasing one of the “Richie” girls in gym, says something that is so poignant to me that puts my experience into perspective. The principal tells Andie, who doesn’t quite fit with her status and quirky personal style, that if she keeps putting out signals that she doesn’t want to belong, people will make sure that she doesn’t. To which she responds, “That’s a beautiful theory.”be the weird one, own your own style, work hard, be what you want, no matter what box others put you in, be bizarre and unexpected
  6. STAND UP FOR YOURSELF:  I admire Andie’s boldness in dealing with bullying and awful situations. She kept her head high and stood her ground. I try to be like this in my own life, to speak boldly and unapologetically despite social pressures.
  7. BE A CREATIVE ALCHEMIST: I always loved Andie’s personal style. She had a way of dressing that was cool and unique. She wore short hair in endless ways. Hats, stockings, pearls ...So cool. Y Andie TOOK APART, AND REWORKED the dress to her liking for a fabulous end product. Andie’s ingenuity shows me that I am enough and that I have more than I might think to my disposal in my life. Her creativity gives me tons of inspiration and courage.

#7 - Dead Poets Society:

  1.  In watching the movie, I was struck by the impact one person can have on the lives of others. Through Keating’s encouragement and leadership, the boys take risks, find their passions, and come to understand the importance of independent thinking. He was able to inspire his students to attempt and accomplish things they hadn’t even dared to dream about before.
  2. It’s not who you are but what you do that defines you. Keating conveys this message to his students because he doesn’t want them to be held back by preconceived ideas. It’s not about race, gender, age, or even experience. People are measured by what they accomplish. Keating encourages action on the part of his students. He wants them to relentlessly pursue their passions. Isn’t that what you want for the people on your team?
  3. Change the angle. Keating tells his students that when you think you have something all figured out, it’s time to look at it from a new perspective. He encourages independent thinking. He wants his students to avoid conformity. We all work for organizations that have their own culture and where there is an established way of doing things—and maybe an established way of thinking. If you really want to break through the status quo, you need to get your people thinking in new and innovative ways. You need to get them looking at things from a new perspective. Warning: In the movie, it costs Keating his job, but it leaves an impression on a group of boys and changes their lives.
  4. Carpe diem—seize the day. Keating tells his students to seize the day. It’s OK to talk and dream, but in the end, it’s action that will allow you to grab the prize. You must encourage action in your people. All of the talking, planning, and strategizing will get you nowhere unless you put them into action. I constantly talk about the employees in our company who are action-oriented. I don’t care that they tend to make more mistakes or pursue endeavors that don’t work out because they’re making something happen. You need to convince your people to seize the day. The time we waste today is gone forever.

Being an optimist is sometimes a revolutionary act, and sometimes the rebellion takes the form of pretending you’re more experienced than you are, leaving the partner who isn’t the right fit for you, starting a business, learning to dance, going for the competition even if you’re not exactly the “right” person for the gig

Find and stick with their weirdos who believe in you - and stick with and support them!

We’re flawed, but we CAN overcome those flaws

Work hard, stick with it, practice, keep showing up, get through the failures.

We know that every woman’s worst critic is . . . herself. It’s a sad but true fact. Why do we spend so much time and energy berating and judging ourselves for falling short of our perfectionist ideals? Why can’t we embrace the truth of who we were created to be and who we have become through the ups and downs of life? This might be just the interview that you need to hear today.

In this episode, we discuss some juicy topics for women. What if you took the energy you spend on self-improving and bashing your body in chasing impossible standards of perfectionism and channeled that energy into things that truly bring you alive? Join us!

As an artist, there are many constructs you have to overcome in order to create authenticity. Whether those are mental, societal, or physical, there’s an element of discovery that cannot be revealed without releasing our pre-existing perception of the world.

Lindsay Katt is a brilliant example of what it means to be unapologetically yourself, as well as a colorful illustration of an artist. As a musician, filmmaker, painter, and master of doing things, Lindsay shares what it means to use your voice unapologetically in a way that resonates with others. She discusses how to use art to improve the lives of those around you, strategies to deal with creative blocks, and how to know when we should violate social rules.

Where do you prefer to work? Part of being in alignment with your core values is how you work, where you work, and with whom you work. I like to work at home sometimes, but I still use a  fantastic coworking space, and I occasionally resort to the tried-and-true coffee shop, where the low caffeinated hum of others around me brings peace and comfort. Most important to me is that I can work in a place that feels welcoming, cozy, and comfortable--and my coworking space gives me that. I’ve found that a coworking space provides fewer distractions than working at home, and I love the benefits and amenities. If you’ve never tried a coworking space, then today’s show will open your eyes!

Today’s show focuses on a topic that doesn’t get enough attention, which is the relationship between early childhood abuse and our ability to be happy, healthy, and successful adults. Let’s take a deeper look with my guest.

Dr. Rosenna Bakari is an author, advocate, and scholar. She’s been busy writing about breaking the silence of sexual violence and helping adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Rosenna is not just a survivor but a thriver. She’s also a psychologist who knows how to help people process their early trauma and find the strength to thrive. I’ve found that the healthiest response to childhood emotional wounds is also the rarest response, which is to feel in order to let things go. Acknowledging the feelings is the way to try out a new set of patterns and ways of being. Rosenna is a role model and voice for those who need support through the different flavors of trauma. Her book is Too Much Love is Not Enough: A Memoir of Childhood Sexual Abuse.

Fertility is a topic that comes up frequently for anyone who works with women. Infertility is a problem that many people face, and it affects men as well as women. Many people you see every day are going through struggles to build their family, although they wear a mask that makes everything seem OK. Today’s guest calls infertility “the silent epidemic,” and the numbers of people affected are simply astounding.

Andrea Syrtash is a relationship expert, journalist, and the founder of Pregnantish, the first media site devoted exclusively to helping singles, couples, and LGBTQ humans navigate fertility treatments and infertility. She’s been featured on Oprah’s OWN Network, FOX, and other TV outlets, and she’s written books titled He’s Just Not Your Type (And That’s a Good Thing), It’s OK to Sleep with Him on the First Date, and Cheat on Your Husband . . . with Your Husband. Because of Andrea’s long, tough journey, she is committed to breaking the taboo of infertility and elevating the conversation about what it takes to start a family for millions of people today. Her work is both interesting and controversial. She’s here to share her story of 18 fertility treatments for eight years, and how she finally met her baby through a surrogate. There are a lot of misconceptions and stigma around types of fertility treatments and infertility. Because this affects so many women, I wanted us to have a deep and meaningful conversation about infertility, the options, and how we can better support friends and family members. We’ll discuss how Andrea kept up her creative, on-air personality while undergoing an intense physical and emotional process behind the scenes. We’ll also discuss the judgments and unwelcome advice that people encounter as they go through infertility, along with the legal ramifications that make things even more difficult.

I made an Instagram post over last weekend applauding the landmark decision of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to pull back from royal life and do what’s right for them. I’ve taken the liberty to make Meghan’s name a past tense verb that means to value yourself enough to leave a situation in which your authentic self is not welcomed or wanted. Don’t we all need to be more like Meghan in making the power move to set rules and boundaries that work for us?

Geneva Peschka is a director, creative producer, and incredible documentary filmmaker. Geneva knows the value and the healing power in telling our own stories. She co-directed Unspoken and is the director/producer of a short documentary series titled Women. We’ll talk about the importance of creating space and allowing people to tell their stories. It’s what life is all about.

No matter where you are on your self-care journey, every moment is a blank-slate opportunity. You can recommit to wellness and your body right now. You deserve it!

Confession: I Was A Copy Cat Coach

I didn’t think I had anything interesting or new to say. Scratch that: I DID believe I had something to say, I just wasn’t saying it. Instead I was copying others and passing it off as my own. Because I was scared...

When I started out as a health coach, 19 years ago, I followed the exact formula set out by the school I attended. That strategy helped me engage and support clients, so I stuck with the formula for years. But then it stopped working. And I thought I just needed a new formula to grow my business again.

So I signed up with a coach who trained me in a new formula and system, and I began to see a new burst of growth and clients. I used that formula for a while, and it started to get harder and harder to find and support new clients.

Was it me? I tend to get bored with systems and formulas, so I have to wonder if my diminishing lack of enthusiasm caused the decrease in clients. Or was it the system?

I then pinballed from coach to coach, system to system, learning new formulas.

That’s when I realized I was copying other coaches. Not just the coaches I was working with, but other coaches who put out newsletters I read, writers who wrote books I loved, and more.

It didn’t feel good.

It wasn’t very successful either.

They say imitation is the highest form of flattery, but when I imitated or copied other coaches, I heard a nagging voice in the back of my mind. The voice said:

“You’re copying someone else. You don’t really have anything original to say. And if it’s not yours, then what good is it? You’re just a poor imitation of someone else. Might as well give up. You’re going to get caught and called out. Better not get too big, or people will notice you’re a fraud…”

UGH. It felt gross.

I hated hearing that voice and the way it made me feel.

The impact of this voice, my Bitch Brain, (AKA Imposter Syndrome, Inner Critic, Resistance), was that I didn’t grow as big as I said I wanted to. My passion for my work was dampened by the fear of being “found out.” My impact on the world, helping women grow into their best versions and create abundant, satisfying lives, was smaller than I dreamed it could be.

And I got called out for my imitation a couple of times.

When I got called out, I made immediate steps to rectify the problem:

  • took down a sales page and rewrote it
  • redesigned a graphic with new colors and words
  • Apologized…

But the real work was in seeing that I wasn’t facing my fear:

The fear of putting out my real work, my real ideas, in my true voice, and possibly having it ignored, criticized, or not making an impact with it at all.

In the hard work of becoming yourself, and clearly presenting your vision, teaching, work, or art, you will have to face the voice that says your work isn’t good enough.

It may keep you quiet and not working at your fullest capacity...

It may cause you to copy-paste someone else’s work and not give them credit...

I may even cause you to close up shop and stop pursuing your dream...

...if you let it.

It’s a dance to create who you are, using the inspiration and education you’ve acquired, and not simply copy someone else who inspires you.

The truth is, even the greatest masters learn from someone, and often copy the work of other creators to learn technique.

When we learn how to cook, we use other people’s recipes.

When we start a business, we follow tested models that have worked for others.

But at some point, we reach a place in our work where we itch to create our own unique way of doing it. And some point, it becomes necessary for growth and our own satisfaction.

  • My most successful cleanse programs, which made tens of thousands of dollars, came after I fused traditional detox practices with positive psychology mindset work.
  • My private coaching has become highly sought after since I integrated dance, art, and creative writing techniques to the personal work of professional success.

To become a unique and authentic teacher, artist, or coach, we have to learn how to filter all of our influences through our unique lens of personal experience and vision.

To create something unique and magnetic, healing and useful, we must bravely do the work. And risk getting is wrong.

My own work and drive to create is fueled in part by a desire to be original and fuse all the truths together.

Your work, or art, or services are a tapestry of all of your experiences and education, sewn and woven together in real time, always evolving.

You are a coat of many colors, not a copy-paste meme.

Today’s show highlights a fascinating PBS documentary, which premieres just a few days from now. It’s made by a dear friend of mine and covers an intriguing phenomenon taking place in Boise, Idaho.

Beth Aala is a three-time Emmy Award-winning producer and Peabody Award winner for her documentary work at HBO. Her most recent documentary is Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman, which she co-directed and produced. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017. Beth is here to discuss her new documentary that will air on PBS on October 28, so check your local listings for more information. The film is called Made In Boise, and it highlights the incredible, booming surrogacy industry that has emerged in Boise, Idaho. Beth shares her approach to the film, the relationships she witnesses, the politics of surrogacy, and the number of strong feelings and opinions brought on by this topic. I believe it’s important for women to see and hear stories about women that are made by women. Beth has built her successful career around the creation of these stories.

Authentic leaders know who they are, and let people in on their truth.

Coaching to uncover your authentic truth is not just about solving problems. Coaching helps you avoid problems by providing accountability and space to think and be more clear and intentional about your goals and actions. And coaching is really helpful for getting clear about where you want to go, and how you want to feel.

Coaches don’t provide a lot of answers, but they do ask a lot of great questions to help you find your own answers.

Here's a list of my top favorite questions that I use with private coaching clients that create:
• Space for self-reflection
• New perspective
• A loving kick in the butt when your thinking is stuck
• Support for difficulties and new ideas
• Accountability for your goals and plans

You’re in for a treat on today’s show as we welcome back one of my favorite guests to talk about some of my favorite topics! We are talking about hormones and sexuality with one of the leading holistic doctors. Middle age brings with it many changes in our physical and sexual health. We’ll cover energy, focus, hormones, and sexuality as they relate to the way our bodies age.

Dr. Anna Cabeca has much to teach us about feeling safe in our bodies and sexual relationships. We’ve been friends for years, and I trust her and her products, and I use them faithfully. She understands the dropoff in energy and focus that comes with middle age, and she knows that balancing our hormones and drives in our bodies support our long-term relationships and our self-worth. If you’re struggling with any of these hormone-related issues, then this is the show for you.

We are diving into deep juiciness today as we explore the topics covered in a new book. This book will challenge your thinking about traditional Christianity and religion, especially regarding the role of women in ancient times as spiritual authorities. Come explore this topic with today’s amazing guest!

Meggan Watterson is a feminist theologian with a Master of Theological Studies degree from Harvard Divinity School and a Master of Divinity from Columbia University. She’s a teacher and writer who leads retreats and workshops on the Divine Feminine and The Soul-Voice Meditation. She is powerful and passionate about her love for Christianity, which wasn’t revealed to her until later in life. Meggan’s latest book is Mary Magdalene Revealed: The First Apostle, Her Feminist Gospel & the Christianity We Haven’t Tried Yet. The book explores the deep, rich history of women in early Christianity in a fascinating way.

25 non-fiction, self-help, and "fluffy fiction" books I read this summer:

How do I source all these books?

Libby and Overdrive Apps - both require a library card, you can download ebooks and audio books for free, or place a hold and they’ll be delivered to your device when it’s your turn.

ThriftBooks app - used books for sale (usually for very cheap) by the owner

Powells.com - used and new books, and you can enter the ISBN from your books and they’ll buy them back from you. You just ship them to Powells with their pre-paid shipping label and I always get credit on their website.

Also, KindleUnlimited - it costs a bit, but for my fluffy fiction I go through them pretty fast. I also know that those authors do get paid by the page count I read, so that feels good.

I’d be lying if I said I never get tempted by a good old fashioned book store - this summer I was in my home town of Portland, OR and simply HAD to get a new book off the shelves.

How I keep track of what I've read for future reference:

For the non-fiction books, I like to take notes. I use Evernote and quote passages or write inspirations I get from the reading. Then I can tag them for future reference. So I have tags like coaching, growth mindset, courage, confidence, creativity, and marketing. I know some people use a google doc for this as well, which I use google for everything else, but Evernote’s tagging system is easier for me. Also, Evernote’s app is easier for me to use and I listen on the go a lot.

As we return to the show after a refreshing summer break, I have a special guest and a new book to share with you about a tough topic that’s close to my heart. September is Suicide Prevention Month, and this week is Suicide Prevention Week. It’s super appropriate that we discuss what life is like for the survivors left behind after the suicide of a loved one. This is something that’s been prevalent in my family, and some of my earliest memories are of the aftermath of a loved one’s suicide. Let’s dive into this topic together!

Sarah Neustadter, Ph.D., is the author of Love You Like the Sky: Surviving the Suicide of a Beloved. The book is heart-wrenching and useful, written from the perspective of a suicide survivor and psychologist. The healing process is an unfolding of growing and learning, but the important thing to know is that there IS help. Sarah wrote this book because all the books she found didn’t touch the raw emotions she felt at the death of her beloved several years ago. She was confronted with hard questions, so the book is designed as a map for navigating complicated grief and understanding grief as a way toward deeper transformation from despair to beauty.

Ever feel like the people in your life just don’t get you?

Or like they’re trying, unconsciously or obviously, to keep you small?

Ever hear about the “bucket of crabs mentality?”

We humans get spooked when people in our life change - it upsets the energy dynamic, and makes us question their own choices… if we’re unaware and unwilling to talk about these things.

See, when you rise up and make creative moves or take bold action, people in your life might get scared that things will change for them… (or they get a big jealous that they’re not taking action on their own dreams.)

Most people don’t have the personal awareness to see their Crab Mentality.

So people all around you might be unconsciously lashing out, reacting and trying to keep you small so their world doesn’t change One. Little. Bit.

That’s why you’ve gotta trust your gut, name.

You’ve gotta fiercely tune into your own knowing, your personal truth, and your own sense of self.

AND, you’ve gotta surround yourself with people who are working on their own grand dreams who are going to cheer you on, not drag you down.

When you’re an artist, healer-teacher, coach, doctor, or creative entrepreneur, you’re always striving to do something different.

When you’re a high-achiever, you’re usually aiming to break barriers and create a new level of performance.

Are you surrounded by people who will hold your hand while cheering you on? People who will tell you it’s ok to screw up - and to keep going?

Every book, movie, painting, or important product you’ve ever loved or admired was created by someone with an idea that came out of the ether:

YOUR creative ideas, business, or unique innovations may seem too risky to someone else, but YOUR gut knows.

There’s something magic there.

And it’s worthwhile to pursue it.

Even if it doesn’t turn out exactly as we originally thought, we learn ourselves through the doing.

And we might just make something better than we ever dreamed.

Our youth-obsessed culture has brainwashed us to believe that we are somehow past our prime. (Actually, it’s a flavor of the toxic patriarchy that we live in: us womxn are always told we’re too old… or too young!)

We see stories that exalt The 30 Under 30, the stories of precocious founders or influencer who “hit it big” before most of us finished grad school.

What they don’t tell you, and what doesn’t get enough attention, is that hitting it big at a young age is the exception, not the rule.

But those are the stories we hear about most often. And it’s disheartening.

So I’m here to share a few inspiring tales of famous folk you admire, and a few of my proud clients, who weren’t young, overnight sensations:

Why do most of us equate our worth as a woman with our body weight? There is no good answer, but we can all agree that things need to change! Our size and body weight has nothing to do with how we deserve love and respect. We’re diving into transformational thinking with today’s guest!

Susan Hyatt has been a life coach for the past 12 years. She has written a brand new book called Bare: A 7-Week Program to Transform Your Body, Get More Energy, Feel Amazing, and Become the Bravest, Most Unstoppable Version of You. When was the last time you were REALLY angry? Did you notice how people around you reacted?  Why are rage and anger assessed differently in men and women? My guest today discusses why we have strong opinions about these emotions, why we’re so judgmental about them, and the impact on us physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. Like it or not, these emotions have an impact on our ability as women to create, do, and be fully realized in the world.

Soraya Chemaly wrote Rage Becomes Her, a book that covers EVERYTHING about this topic. She covers how rage and anger are used against women, and why our disconnection from other women is one of our greatest sources of stress, sadness, and anxiety. Being “too angry” or too emotional will often get us “cut out” of the group. Rage, anger, and anxiety are powerful emotions that signal when our boundaries have been violated. Rage and anger might be the key to the unfolding of our true selves. Let’s jump right in to learn more about rage and anger with Soraya!

Sound familiar? Let’s jump into some key factors and talk about how to find true healing and empowerment.

What does it mean to be brave? How important is it that others see you being brave? Being brave encompasses so many thoughts, feelings, and actions, and it’s difficult to define it with words. Part of being brave is listening to your inner wisdom as you forge your trail courageously through life.

This episode, our 200th, is dedicated to the brave women in my life: my mother and my grandmother, who just recently passed away. My grandmother was an artist, teacher, and mentor who was endlessly supportive of everyone in her family and the others whom she touched with her inspirational and creative life. Although my mother passed away several years ago, she is the one who led me into podcasting. She had her own organic gardening radio show for 10 years every Saturday morning, and this was WAY before the days of podcasts. I’m grateful for the roles these women have played in inspiring me and teaching me about being brave in an ever-changing world. Now, I get the chance to pass along what I’ve learned.

The world gets better when women make money, but so often we are held back by limiting beliefs about money. Women rarely see money as a tool to improve their lives. Instead, it either strikes us with cold fear or hot anger. Here to help us sort out our money mindset issues is Belinda Rosenblum. Belinda is a rare returning guest and a longtime friend of mine. She revamped her financial coaching business after becoming a mother, and I admire her so much for pursuing both her life as a mother and as a business owner with excellence.

Today, Belinda is going to walk us through some of the most inspiring financial transformations she has seen in her years as a financial coach. In each situation, Belinda was able to help her clients gain clarity over their financial reality, and then break down the limiting beliefs that keep them in the dark. She will also teach us about the four steps she uses to evaluate personal finances: mindset and earning, tracking and spending, credit and debt, then saving and investing.

Habits are so important to your health and success. There is so much that we now understand about the psychology of our brain and how habits are formed. Today, we are taking a deep dive into how you can create habits that improve your life. We are creatures of habit, so we have to pay attention how to reframe them.

There are a lot of reasons that we develop habits. Some of them come from cravings that we give in to. Smoking is a habit that is developed and your brain wants to be soothed by it. These habits exert so much control over people that we actually build our lives around the habit. Today we’re talking about how to use your biological cravings to develop habits that help you create the life you love.

It is important that women have more money in their hands. Everything changes when we do. Movements are started, families thrive, and whole communities are transformed before our eyes. We need to be supporting the women in our lives who are running businesses and organizations. Maybe you are a female entrepreneur who might need a little capital to get going or have a service that you know is going to make a difference in the world. How can we support your hard work if we don’t know about it? This is where someone like Selena Soo swoops in and saves the day.

Selena Soo is a PR heroine, and she wants everyone to feel like they have an actual platform from which to share their message and provide their services. I know for a fact that Selena’s relationship building and network expanding powers are the real deal because she worked with me to promote my own book! It’s time to get real about our cravings. I get so many questions from my lovely listeners about how to understand, dismantle, and learn from your cravings, so I wanted to spend some time discussing it on the show. So, let’s think about it: What do you most crave? Is it really that peanut butter cup you have stashed at your desk? Is it really your desire to leave your partner or quit your job? No, it is probably not that. Let’s dive in together to see what a craving really is, and how they are the secret signals showcasing what our bodies truly hunger for.

Cravings are powerful desires. We all have them. We want to feel whole, alive, and satisfied, so oftentimes we start craving things when our needs are not met. Today, I am going to break down some of womankind’s most sinister cravings, why we tend to fall for fatty food traps, and how we can break the cycle. When you start listening to your inner wisdom and asking your body what vital needs are going unmet, you will start to understand that cravings are not demons for you to fight off. They are messages we can hear and interpret with confidence.

Today, I have not one, but two brave, amazing women to bring to your ears today. First up is one of my favorite lady comics, Joyelle Nichole. Joyelle embodies the important qualities of a stand-up comedian: she’s smart, she speaks the truth, and she speaks from an authentic, real place. Joyelle is going to share her amazing journey to stand-up, why she uses comedy to advocate for women’s health rights, and how the storytelling greats have inspired her to push through adversity. In our discussion, we also talked about what it means to be a woman in today’s political climate, and Joyelle, in particular, weighed in on what it means to be a black woman, in particular. On the lighter side of things, Joyelle and I bonded over roller-skating and knee injuries! We have so much to learn about the world from Joyelle and comedians like her, so I feel fortunate to have her on the show.

Next up, I will continue the conversation around our current political climate with one of you, my amazing listeners. Marnie has been listening since the show started, and she reached out to me regarding a comment I had made on the show about my feelings on our current president. Marnie actually voted for Trump, and she felt like she needed to express why she made that decision and learn more about my perspective on the election. Her email made me realize that I was in a bubble, and I didn’t know anyone personally who voted for him. Our conversation exemplifies the kinds of chats we need to have with our fellow sisters, regardless of who they voted for or what their political views might be. Even though we voted differently, Marnie and I have so much in common, and she is definitely the kind of person I would want to go to tea with. At the end, I gave Marnie a challenge that I think you’ll want to join in too. I am excited to continue these kinds of conversations with an open heart and mind. After all, that is what this community is for!

What do you want? It might seem like a simple or even childish question, but I believe it is an essential question in every woman’s life. Sometimes, “What do I want” is a dangerous question. In order to honestly answer, we need to get vulnerable and emotionally naked. If you’ve never taken the time to get honest about your desires, or you are just beginning to unlock the power of desire, then this is the place for you to be. Welcome to the safest place to let your deepest wishes run wild.

After 17 years of coaching, I have seen woman after woman learn to trust herself completely and follow her desires wholeheartedly. The results speak for themselves: more energy, satisfying work, pleasurable relationships, and so much more. When we learn to listen to not just our desires but also our bodies, we can unlock a life of pure happiness, and you deserve that. It’s time to start thinking differently about what will bring you lasting satisfaction. Yes, your cravings, desires, and yearnings can save you.

I am going to share how I learned to start trusting my body and my deepest desires. I’ve had many jobs and lived many lives. I’ve struggled and fought for what I knew would be best for me. On the other side of the transformation, I can see how each phase of my life was a lesson in listening to myself. Do you want to stop living by the world’s rules, and start making your own? Come and join me today.

It’s the season of love! With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, now feels like the perfect time to celebrate and connect the people we love and those who love us well. Now is also a great time to love yourself, as I did with a life-giving watercolor class. With all this love floating around this time of year, it is easy to drudge up the dark side of relationships along with the happy stuff. It is easy to celebrate the relationships that are going well on Valentine's Day, but what about the ones that aren’t? For instance, what happens in the case of infidelity?

Esther Perel is my guest today, and she literally wrote the book on infidelity. The State of Affairs chronicles Esther’s work with couples doing the hard work of processing an affair. Some relationships break under the weight of it, but sometimes couples find that infidelity leads to rebirth. Whether the couple chooses to recommit to the relationship or dissolve it, we have a lot to learn from Esther and her experiences.

Times have changed, so our concept of infidelity has changed. It is more important than ever that couples are communicating about how they feel and what they need. Esther is going to give us some incredible insight into why couples have affairs, and how their relationships can go on after a relationship. One of the biggest pieces of insight Esther has to share is that affairs can happen in all relationships, good and bad. She is going to show us why people break their own rules and even their own values. So many individuals are massively conflicted, and Esther seeks to understand them.

Now, more than ever, we need to be supporting men as they enter into a vulnerable space, and then support women as they embrace their own power. Gender identities are changing. Relationships are changing. Infidelity is changing right along with it. The more we understand, the better we can support our relationships with it!

With so much crazy darkness going on in the world around me, I am looking to comedians for inspiration, truth, and just a little bit of comic relief. It’s my belief that comedians have to be incredibly smart to put their finger on the truth of the matter, and then turn it on its head in a funny way. I have been watching educated, woke comedy so much recently, that I knew I needed to bring some of this inspiration to your ears as well.  This is why I am super excited to introduce (or maybe re-introduce) to you Lizz Winstead. Lizz is a Creator, a producer, a writer… and she is hilarious. I’m lucky to have her here!

One of Lizz’s claims to fame is that she is the co-creator of The Daily Show. When she’s not spinning comedy gold, Lizz is standing up for women everywhere by advocating for women’s reproductive health. Her nonprofit, Lady Parts Justice, stands up for women by providing access to healthcare and information about reproductive health. Very soon, Lizz is hosting an online telethon, Life Is A Living Nightmare, that is sure to be hilarious as well as informative. I would encourage everyone to give it a watch when it premieres on February 1st.

Above all, Lady Part’s Justice is about informing and educating the public about the issue of reproductive health. Today, Lizz is bringing that huge knowledge base to wake us up to all the terrible legislation, dangerous trends, and inspiring activism that is happening across the world. Her chosen vehicle to inform the public? Comedy! Lizz uses humor to call out hypocrisy and challenge us to change. She believes that change is happening if only we would use our voices to stand up for the basic rights of our fellow human beings. Trans, Cis, Female, Male…everyone deserves the rights of reproductive health and choice. If you aren’t fired up over this issue, you will be once Lizz is done with you! Go ahead and give this episode a listen, and don’t forget to support the cause!

2018 has already proved to be a year of challenge and transformation. I am going to start the year off from an admittedly vulnerable position, but isn’t that what this Podcast is all about? This season has proven to be exceptionally difficult for my family, but I know that the Her Rules Radio community will rally around me. I hope that by sharing my own struggles, I will inspire you to embrace yourself through difficulties. Yes, I have been harboring a lot of bad feelings. I’ve been judging another woman and withholding forgiveness. Listen as I share exactly why I decided forgiveness was within my power, and how it has freed me from so much I cannot control.

Continuing on the theme of vulnerability and transformation, I have invited Penney Peirce onto the show today. Where can I begin with someone like Penney? She is the author of so many incredible books that have personally changed my life, but the most recent is Transparency. Penney encourages and teaches women from all walks of life about the energies and frequencies that we can tap into if we only know where to look. The world is changing, and we are entering the Age of Intuition and Insight. Penney will break that down for you in an incredibly accessible way.

Today, I want to go into battle against “The Goddess Myth.” A TIME Magazine article attempted to address one of our culture’s most pervasive problems, but I think they missed the big picture. Our media paints a picture of perfect, goddess-like womanhood.  You’ve seen the pictures: the natural birthing mama with a fully organic household and effortless beauty in spades. These images can be damaging because they never allow for imperfections. Real goddesses had both a light and a dark side. Rather than saying women shouldn’t compare themselves to goddesses, the article actually states that women aren’t worthy of goddess-like reverence. Apparently, we have to be perfect to be revered. That isn’t true of female deities from cultures around the globe. I’m going to show you how.

It is impeccable timing that I have the incredible Claire Wasserman with me today. Claire is the mastermind behind Ladies Get Paid, a program that connects women in business to other women to help bridge the knowledge gap. We’ve talked about the wage gap, the glass ceiling, and how women feel unable to negotiate. Well, now you are going to be connected to the resources that tell you how to fight it. Claire knows that many of these problems are systematic, but that doesn’t stop her from joining together communities of women to fight the system. What is beautiful about Ladies Get Paid is that the focus is on women taking agency and advocating for themselves.

It’s time for some things to change. Women should feel like they have a place in the workforce. Organizations like Ladies Get Paid are making that happen. Be a part of the change, and give this episode a listen.

What in the world has you feeling like shit? We all have our vices and our habits, but have you ever stopped to think that these habits we form over time might eventually stop serving our happiness? What if those things we think are protecting our happiness are actually making us feel like shit? We are women who feel deeply and want to embrace happiness, but there are things in our lives that keep us from going at happiness with everything that we’ve got. That is exactly what my friend and guest, Andrea Owen, is talking about in her new book How To Stop Feeling Like Shit

Are you ready for a truth bomb or two today? Andrea lays it all out there as she shares her toughest moments, her biggest heartbreaks, and then her mightiest triumphs. We get real about numbing mechanisms, the many faces of perfectionism, and what we can do about those things. It’s time for us to own our shit, and embrace the hard work of healing. Now is time to start. You’ll be ready after listening to this conversation with Andrea.

Are you curious about meditation? Or have you already tried doing it and found yourself becoming really frustrated? If so, today's show is just for you. We have a super inspiring interview today with Ali Smith, one of the co-founders and co-leaders of The Holistic Life Foundation. At the Holistic Life Foundation, they are bringing the skills of mindfulness to kids and this is having a very positive impact on them- and really quickly! Ali and his partners go out into the schools, both public and private, in the Baltimore area and they teach meditation. In the schools where they have introduced their mindfulness programs, the number of suspensions and detentions have been drastically reduced, with some schools even having zero suspensions, after instituting the program. This has brought The Holistic Life Foundation a whole lot of attention, over the last few years. Listen in now, to find out more.

Alex was really fortunate to have met Ali at Quad City's Health Conference in Iowa, at the beginning of 2017. Ali was taught to meditate, by his father at a very young age, but due to unforseen circumstances, his meditation practice fell by the wayside while he was still a child. When he was in his early twenties, he started searching for some answers and for a way to overcome his anxiety, so he started the process of mindfulness all over again. You're really going to love this interview, so listen in, to find out more about Ali and the awesome results of his Mindful Moment Program for schools.

In a Post-9/11 world, the threat of extremist terrorists is a concerning and much-politicized fear for many. We’ve all seen the movies and read the stories of counter-terrorism efforts by the CIA. It may come as a surprise to you, then, that the CIA’s real front man for many undercover anti-terror missions in the Middle East was not actually a man at all. Against all odds and expectations, Michelle Rigby Assad led many successful missions in a male-dominated field within a male-dominated culture. How in the world did she do it?

Today, I sit down with Michelle to talk about her upcoming book, Breaking Cover, where she shares how she became a CIA agent, used her knowledge of Arab culture and language to earn her spot in the Debriefing Room, and then go deep undercover over in the Middle East. It was always a little like walking a tightrope between knowing she was the right woman for the job, and dealing with the insecurities and self-doubt that many of us experience even in less dangerous situations. Michelle puts on display true empathy, honor, and intelligence, proving that your unique gifts are what make you invaluable, not your appearance and gender. I can’t wait for you to hear her incredible stories today as we navigate what it means to be a woman in the world.

Do you, as a woman, feel unsafe or unprotected in your body? Do you feel scared or anxious lately and find yourself eating too much and putting on weight? If so, it's hardly surprising, because there's a lot happening in the country right now, that makes us feel really vulnerable and there have been some shocking things happening in the news lately that we really need to talk about. Recently, a man in Michigan who raped a very young woman (a twelve-year-old girl, actually), has won joint custody of the child of the victim! This case is one the first of it's kind, however, due to there being no laws at all preventing rapists from asserting their parental rights over a child in seven states- including Michigan, this is unlikely to be the last. Listen in as Alex shares a little of what happened, in this outrageous example of how women are really left unprotected lately and of how women's rights really are under attack currently, with children even being thrown into the mix.

Are you a micro-managing Mama who feels ashamed that your outer success feels inauthentic to you?  Are you frustrated because you can't manage your own diet when you are managing a huge multi-million dollar portfolio for your company?  Or do you feel secretly jealous of the women who really seem to have it all figured out? If so, Alex can really relate! She 'had it all' and still couldn't relax.  She used to be a control freak and she really tried to do it all herself. She copied everyone's systems and followed the rules to the letter- she was a real Type A Girl and it worked, but only for a while. Then she would either sabotage herself, or things would just stop working. Listen in to find out what Alex discovered, about getting graceful with change and about what really will happen to you, if you unshackle your innate desires and start honoring your inner wildness.

Today’s show is about one of the most important rules I have learned in my life. Deliciously happy women have some uncommon skills, and today we are talking about validating yourself. I had to learn to validate my own damn self and it wasn’t an easy process. Why do we need validation from others? Why can’t we be content with our own validation? I had to learn to trust myself. I needed someone else to tell me that my thoughts and feelings were valid. I was trained to look outside myself for guidance. I was taught not to trust myself and to question my knowing. It’s a trap to always think we need someone else to tell us what is right and what we need to do.

If you've been listening to this show, you know that it's all about helping us, as women, to create our own rules in life...but why should we care about that? Well, there are many reasons and the truth of it is that most of us are really suffering, from trying to live life by someone else's rules. We tend to live with false beliefs that make our lives really hard, pulling us right out of alignment and causing us to live in an inauthentic way.

So, last week, Alex decided to put the question out on Facebook and Instagram, to find out from all you Rulers out there, which rules, norms or social constructs you see people following, that actually make them miserable. She got a really huge response, so listen in now, as she shares some of the rules that you, as listeners, would like to erase, or rewrite.

Last week was the major solar eclipse.  Alex was leading a private two day retreat for one of her private VIP clients at the time, doing some really deep work. The vibe, as they got closer to the apex of the solar eclipse, got really intense and weird and they both felt that the energy during those two days had become heightened. It was a really powerful experience and things became super clear, super fast and by the end of their two days together, her client really felt a life changing shift. She felt like a new person, reborn! So, if you're thinking of going away on a retreat, or working with a coach, Alex really encourages you to do it now, as she sees this time as the right time to do it.

We are wasting time! Our time is valuable and important, so it is time to stand up for it. We, as women, can be seen as bossy or pushy when we fight to reclaim our time. Life is meant to nourish us, yes? So why does it feel like a frantic race to the end? How does love actually work? Is it really possible to fall in love with anyone? Today we're going into a powerful interview about love!

In today's interview with Mandy Len Catron, we are going to explore love on a really profound level. Mandy's written a book, which is a beautiful tale as well as a process that she managed to unearth, where you really can fall in love with anyone. Mandy has thirty-six questions in her process, that can be used to foster compassion, understanding, and connection with literally anyone. All of us can really use this powerful tool, in this day and age, to help us to connect with those we feel hatred or anger either from or towards. Alex really encourages you to listen in very carefully and with an open heart, as  Mandy talks about the book she wrote in 2015, which became a New York Times Modern Love Piece.  It's called How To Fall In Love With Anyone and it went insanely viral, being one of the most shared articles in The Times, that year.  In our current times, we really need to learn how to connect with the people who are different from us or the ones that we don't know much about. That is, ultimately, what will save us. Listen in now!
