Her Rules Radio (general)

25 non-fiction, self-help, and "fluffy fiction" books I read this summer:

How do I source all these books?

Libby and Overdrive Apps - both require a library card, you can download ebooks and audio books for free, or place a hold and they’ll be delivered to your device when it’s your turn.

ThriftBooks app - used books for sale (usually for very cheap) by the owner

Powells.com - used and new books, and you can enter the ISBN from your books and they’ll buy them back from you. You just ship them to Powells with their pre-paid shipping label and I always get credit on their website.

Also, KindleUnlimited - it costs a bit, but for my fluffy fiction I go through them pretty fast. I also know that those authors do get paid by the page count I read, so that feels good.

I’d be lying if I said I never get tempted by a good old fashioned book store - this summer I was in my home town of Portland, OR and simply HAD to get a new book off the shelves.

How I keep track of what I've read for future reference:

For the non-fiction books, I like to take notes. I use Evernote and quote passages or write inspirations I get from the reading. Then I can tag them for future reference. So I have tags like coaching, growth mindset, courage, confidence, creativity, and marketing. I know some people use a google doc for this as well, which I use google for everything else, but Evernote’s tagging system is easier for me. Also, Evernote’s app is easier for me to use and I listen on the go a lot.

As we return to the show after a refreshing summer break, I have a special guest and a new book to share with you about a tough topic that’s close to my heart. September is Suicide Prevention Month, and this week is Suicide Prevention Week. It’s super appropriate that we discuss what life is like for the survivors left behind after the suicide of a loved one. This is something that’s been prevalent in my family, and some of my earliest memories are of the aftermath of a loved one’s suicide. Let’s dive into this topic together!

Sarah Neustadter, Ph.D., is the author of Love You Like the Sky: Surviving the Suicide of a Beloved. The book is heart-wrenching and useful, written from the perspective of a suicide survivor and psychologist. The healing process is an unfolding of growing and learning, but the important thing to know is that there IS help. Sarah wrote this book because all the books she found didn’t touch the raw emotions she felt at the death of her beloved several years ago. She was confronted with hard questions, so the book is designed as a map for navigating complicated grief and understanding grief as a way toward deeper transformation from despair to beauty.

Ever feel like the people in your life just don’t get you?

Or like they’re trying, unconsciously or obviously, to keep you small?

Ever hear about the “bucket of crabs mentality?”

We humans get spooked when people in our life change - it upsets the energy dynamic, and makes us question their own choices… if we’re unaware and unwilling to talk about these things.

See, when you rise up and make creative moves or take bold action, people in your life might get scared that things will change for them… (or they get a big jealous that they’re not taking action on their own dreams.)

Most people don’t have the personal awareness to see their Crab Mentality.

So people all around you might be unconsciously lashing out, reacting and trying to keep you small so their world doesn’t change One. Little. Bit.

That’s why you’ve gotta trust your gut, name.

You’ve gotta fiercely tune into your own knowing, your personal truth, and your own sense of self.

AND, you’ve gotta surround yourself with people who are working on their own grand dreams who are going to cheer you on, not drag you down.

When you’re an artist, healer-teacher, coach, doctor, or creative entrepreneur, you’re always striving to do something different.

When you’re a high-achiever, you’re usually aiming to break barriers and create a new level of performance.

Are you surrounded by people who will hold your hand while cheering you on? People who will tell you it’s ok to screw up - and to keep going?

Every book, movie, painting, or important product you’ve ever loved or admired was created by someone with an idea that came out of the ether:

YOUR creative ideas, business, or unique innovations may seem too risky to someone else, but YOUR gut knows.

There’s something magic there.

And it’s worthwhile to pursue it.

Even if it doesn’t turn out exactly as we originally thought, we learn ourselves through the doing.

And we might just make something better than we ever dreamed.

Our youth-obsessed culture has brainwashed us to believe that we are somehow past our prime. (Actually, it’s a flavor of the toxic patriarchy that we live in: us womxn are always told we’re too old… or too young!)

We see stories that exalt The 30 Under 30, the stories of precocious founders or influencer who “hit it big” before most of us finished grad school.

What they don’t tell you, and what doesn’t get enough attention, is that hitting it big at a young age is the exception, not the rule.

But those are the stories we hear about most often. And it’s disheartening.

So I’m here to share a few inspiring tales of famous folk you admire, and a few of my proud clients, who weren’t young, overnight sensations:

Why do most of us equate our worth as a woman with our body weight? There is no good answer, but we can all agree that things need to change! Our size and body weight has nothing to do with how we deserve love and respect. We’re diving into transformational thinking with today’s guest!

Susan Hyatt has been a life coach for the past 12 years. She has written a brand new book called Bare: A 7-Week Program to Transform Your Body, Get More Energy, Feel Amazing, and Become the Bravest, Most Unstoppable Version of You. The book distills the program she’s been teaching to her clients for years. The book covers the foundation principles that you are more than your body; you are whole and complete with unlimited potential. Susan wants women to feel satisfied and well in their bodies. Susan’s work focuses on how we should treat our bodies with care, love, and respect, and shed the mindset that keeps us weighted down and too exhausted and afraid to be seen. We need to quit worrying about our weight and focus on the things that really matter!

It’s a new year, and I, for one, am glad 2018 is over! We are changing up the format of the show, going from a weekly show format to doing two shows monthly with quality guests and conversations. Marsha Jones is from the Afiya Center in Texas. Their work is centered around the experience for black women, especially in services for reproductive health. The center is a voice to advocate against harmful policies and legislation that keep these women at risk. Maternal mortality is a huge issue all around the world, and specifically in Texas, where maternal mortality has doubled in recent years! The Afiya Center provides outreach, education, and care to aid these women who have been largely ignored and passed over on the legislative front. Is it medical murder when their pain is ignored and they aren’t given appropriate care?

When was the last time you were REALLY angry? Did you notice how people around you reacted?  Why are rage and anger assessed differently in men and women? My guest today discusses why we have strong opinions about these emotions, why we’re so judgmental about them, and the impact on us physically, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally. Like it or not, these emotions have an impact on our ability as women to create, do, and be fully realized in the world.

Soraya Chemaly wrote Rage Becomes Her, a book that covers EVERYTHING about this topic. She covers how rage and anger are used against women, and why our disconnection from other women is one of our greatest sources of stress, sadness, and anxiety. Being “too angry” or too emotional will often get us “cut out” of the group. Rage, anger, and anxiety are powerful emotions that signal when our boundaries have been violated. Rage and anger might be the key to the unfolding of our true selves. Let’s jump right in to learn more about rage and anger with Soraya!

What does it mean to be brave? How important is it that others see you being brave? Being brave encompasses so many thoughts, feelings, and actions, and it’s difficult to define it with words. Part of being brave is listening to your inner wisdom as you forge your trail courageously through life.

This episode, our 200th, is dedicated to the brave women in my life: my mother and my grandmother, who just recently passed away. My grandmother was an artist, teacher, and mentor who was endlessly supportive of everyone in her family and the others whom she touched with her inspirational and creative life. Although my mother passed away several years ago, she is the one who led me into podcasting. She had her own organic gardening radio show for 10 years every Saturday morning, and this was WAY before the days of podcasts. I’m grateful for the roles these women have played in inspiring me and teaching me about being brave in an ever-changing world. Now, I get the chance to pass along what I’ve learned.

Do you know an “Energy Vampire?” Is there a relationship that leaves you drained and hurt, but you can’t seem to escape that person's power over you? It looks like you might be an Empath, and you are definitely in the right place to change your life. It is such an incredible privilege to get to speak with Dr. Christiane Northrup, a writer and scholar whose groundbreaking books have been changing lives for decades. Her most recent book, Dodging Energy Vampires: an Empath’s Guide for Avoiding Relationships That Drain You and Restoring Your Health and Power is, in my opinion, her best yet.

The world gets better when women make money, but so often we are held back by limiting beliefs about money. Women rarely see money as a tool to improve their lives. Instead, it either strikes us with cold fear or hot anger. Here to help us sort out our money mindset issues is Belinda Rosenblum. Belinda is a rare returning guest and a longtime friend of mine. She revamped her financial coaching business after becoming a mother, and I admire her so much for pursuing both her life as a mother and as a business owner with excellence.

Today, Belinda is going to walk us through some of the most inspiring financial transformations she has seen in her years as a financial coach. In each situation, Belinda was able to help her clients gain clarity over their financial reality, and then break down the limiting beliefs that keep them in the dark. She will also teach us about the four steps she uses to evaluate personal finances: mindset and earning, tracking and spending, credit and debt, then saving and investing.

There’s a lot of life going on around you, and the world is sending you messages about what you should look like and how you can feel. We have forgotten how to trust our intuition. It is time to fight for your right to love your body, and I’m going to show you how.

We often talk about breaking the rules around sexual health on the show, but sexual health is about more than safe sex and reproductive rights. It is time that we start talking about our attitudes towards sex as well. Now, more than ever before, female sexuality has been the focal point of breaking news stories and scandals. The world is buzzing about female sexual health, so we need to raise our voices above the buzz! It’s time female sexual attitudes are taken seriously.

Habits are so important to your health and success. There is so much that we now understand about the psychology of our brain and how habits are formed. Today, we are taking a deep dive into how you can create habits that improve your life. We are creatures of habit, so we have to pay attention how to reframe them.

There are a lot of reasons that we develop habits. Some of them come from cravings that we give in to. Smoking is a habit that is developed and your brain wants to be soothed by it. These habits exert so much control over people that we actually build our lives around the habit. Today we’re talking about how to use your biological cravings to develop habits that help you create the life you love.

How can we have the energy we want, and be rooted in our bodies? It starts with how we feed and nourish ourselves. The natural world is filled to bursting with the remedies to our energy problem, but with so much conflicting advice out there, it is difficult to know who to trust. That is why it is so important to me to bring you my guest, whose wisdom is vetted by top research as well as personal experience. It is important that women have more money in their hands. Everything changes when we do. Movements are started, families thrive, and whole communities are transformed before our eyes. We need to be supporting the women in our lives who are running businesses and organizations. Maybe you are a female entrepreneur who might need a little capital to get going or have a service that you know is going to make a difference in the world. How can we support your hard work if we don’t know about it? This is where someone like Selena Soo swoops in and saves the day.

Selena Soo is a PR heroine, and she wants everyone to feel like they have an actual platform from which to share their message and provide their services. I know for a fact that Selena’s relationship building and network expanding powers are the real deal because she worked with me to promote my own book! Women, Food, and Desire would not be the success it is today without Selena, so of course, I wanted to have her on the show today to talk about Impact Millions.

Impact Millions is Selena’s latest and greatest mastermind where you get all of her secrets to amazing publicity for your next project or business. In these live classes, Selena will share her secrets to building valuable relationships and how we can support one another in the process. Above all, Selena is running a heart-centered operation that helps creative women, like me and you, reach a broader audience. Today, Selena is going to share her own journey, her moments of struggle, and, ultimately, her moments of success.

It’s time to get real about our cravings. I get so many questions from my lovely listeners about how to understand, dismantle, and learn from your cravings, so I wanted to spend some time discussing it on the show. So, let’s think about it: What do you most crave? Is it really that peanut butter cup you have stashed at your desk? Is it really your desire to leave your partner or quit your job? No, it is probably not that. Let’s dive in together to see what a craving really is, and how they are the secret signals showcasing what our bodies truly hunger for.

Cravings are powerful desires. We all have them. We want to feel whole, alive, and satisfied, so oftentimes we start craving things when our needs are not met. Today, I am going to break down some of womankind’s most sinister cravings, why we tend to fall for fatty food traps, and how we can break the cycle. When you start listening to your inner wisdom and asking your body what vital needs are going unmet, you will start to understand that cravings are not demons for you to fight off. They are messages we can hear and interpret with confidence.

Today, I have not one, but two brave, amazing women to bring to your ears today. First up is one of my favorite lady comics, Joyelle Nichole. Joyelle embodies the important qualities of a stand-up comedian: she’s smart, she speaks the truth, and she speaks from an authentic, real place. Joyelle is going to share her amazing journey to stand-up, why she uses comedy to advocate for women’s health rights, and how the storytelling greats have inspired her to push through adversity. In our discussion, we also talked about what it means to be a woman in today’s political climate, and Joyelle, in particular, weighed in on what it means to be a black woman, in particular. On the lighter side of things, Joyelle and I bonded over roller-skating and knee injuries! We have so much to learn about the world from Joyelle and comedians like her, so I feel fortunate to have her on the show.

Next up, I will continue the conversation around our current political climate with one of you, my amazing listeners. Marnie has been listening since the show started, and she reached out to me regarding a comment I had made on the show about my feelings on our current president. Marnie actually voted for Trump, and she felt like she needed to express why she made that decision and learn more about my perspective on the election. Her email made me realize that I was in a bubble, and I didn’t know anyone personally who voted for him. Our conversation exemplifies the kinds of chats we need to have with our fellow sisters, regardless of who they voted for or what their political views might be. Even though we voted differently, Marnie and I have so much in common, and she is definitely the kind of person I would want to go to tea with. At the end, I gave Marnie a challenge that I think you’ll want to join in too. I am excited to continue these kinds of conversations with an open heart and mind. After all, that is what this community is for!

What do you want? It might seem like a simple or even childish question, but I believe it is an essential question in every woman’s life. Sometimes, “What do I want” is a dangerous question. In order to honestly answer, we need to get vulnerable and emotionally naked. If you’ve never taken the time to get honest about your desires, or you are just beginning to unlock the power of desire, then this is the place for you to be. Welcome to the safest place to let your deepest wishes run wild.

After 17 years of coaching, I have seen woman after woman learn to trust herself completely and follow her desires wholeheartedly. The results speak for themselves: more energy, satisfying work, pleasurable relationships, and so much more. When we learn to listen to not just our desires but also our bodies, we can unlock a life of pure happiness, and you deserve that. It’s time to start thinking differently about what will bring you lasting satisfaction. Yes, your cravings, desires, and yearnings can save you.

I am going to share how I learned to start trusting my body and my deepest desires. I’ve had many jobs and lived many lives. I’ve struggled and fought for what I knew would be best for me. On the other side of the transformation, I can see how each phase of my life was a lesson in listening to myself. Do you want to stop living by the world’s rules, and start making your own? Come and join me today.

It’s the season of love! With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, now feels like the perfect time to celebrate and connect the people we love and those who love us well. Now is also a great time to love yourself, as I did with a life-giving watercolor class. With all this love floating around this time of year, it is easy to drudge up the dark side of relationships along with the happy stuff. It is easy to celebrate the relationships that are going well on Valentine's Day, but what about the ones that aren’t? For instance, what happens in the case of infidelity?

Esther Perel is my guest today, and she literally wrote the book on infidelity. The State of Affairs chronicles Esther’s work with couples doing the hard work of processing an affair. Some relationships break under the weight of it, but sometimes couples find that infidelity leads to rebirth. Whether the couple chooses to recommit to the relationship or dissolve it, we have a lot to learn from Esther and her experiences.

Times have changed, so our concept of infidelity has changed. It is more important than ever that couples are communicating about how they feel and what they need. Esther is going to give us some incredible insight into why couples have affairs, and how their relationships can go on after a relationship. One of the biggest pieces of insight Esther has to share is that affairs can happen in all relationships, good and bad. She is going to show us why people break their own rules and even their own values. So many individuals are massively conflicted, and Esther seeks to understand them.

Now, more than ever, we need to be supporting men as they enter into a vulnerable space, and then support women as they embrace their own power. Gender identities are changing. Relationships are changing. Infidelity is changing right along with it. The more we understand, the better we can support our relationships with it!

With so much crazy darkness going on in the world around me, I am looking to comedians for inspiration, truth, and just a little bit of comic relief. It’s my belief that comedians have to be incredibly smart to put their finger on the truth of the matter, and then turn it on its head in a funny way. I have been watching educated, woke comedy so much recently, that I knew I needed to bring some of this inspiration to your ears as well.  This is why I am super excited to introduce (or maybe re-introduce) to you Lizz Winstead. Lizz is a Creator, a producer, a writer… and she is hilarious. I’m lucky to have her here!

One of Lizz’s claims to fame is that she is the co-creator of The Daily Show. When she’s not spinning comedy gold, Lizz is standing up for women everywhere by advocating for women’s reproductive health. Her nonprofit, Lady Parts Justice, stands up for women by providing access to healthcare and information about reproductive health. Very soon, Lizz is hosting an online telethon, Life Is A Living Nightmare, that is sure to be hilarious as well as informative. I would encourage everyone to give it a watch when it premieres on February 1st.

Above all, Lady Part’s Justice is about informing and educating the public about the issue of reproductive health. Today, Lizz is bringing that huge knowledge base to wake us up to all the terrible legislation, dangerous trends, and inspiring activism that is happening across the world. Her chosen vehicle to inform the public? Comedy! Lizz uses humor to call out hypocrisy and challenge us to change. She believes that change is happening if only we would use our voices to stand up for the basic rights of our fellow human beings. Trans, Cis, Female, Male…everyone deserves the rights of reproductive health and choice. If you aren’t fired up over this issue, you will be once Lizz is done with you! Go ahead and give this episode a listen, and don’t forget to support the cause!

2018 has already proved to be a year of challenge and transformation. I am going to start the year off from an admittedly vulnerable position, but isn’t that what this Podcast is all about? This season has proven to be exceptionally difficult for my family, but I know that the Her Rules Radio community will rally around me. I hope that by sharing my own struggles, I will inspire you to embrace yourself through difficulties. Yes, I have been harboring a lot of bad feelings. I’ve been judging another woman and withholding forgiveness. Listen as I share exactly why I decided forgiveness was within my power, and how it has freed me from so much I cannot control.

Continuing on the theme of vulnerability and transformation, I have invited Penney Peirce onto the show today. Where can I begin with someone like Penney? She is the author of so many incredible books that have personally changed my life, but the most recent is Transparency. Penney encourages and teaches women from all walks of life about the energies and frequencies that we can tap into if we only know where to look. The world is changing, and we are entering the Age of Intuition and Insight. Penney will break that down for you in an incredibly accessible way.

Today, I want to go into battle against “The Goddess Myth.” A TIME Magazine article attempted to address one of our culture’s most pervasive problems, but I think they missed the big picture. Our media paints a picture of perfect, goddess-like womanhood.  You’ve seen the pictures: the natural birthing mama with a fully organic household and effortless beauty in spades. These images can be damaging because they never allow for imperfections. Real goddesses had both a light and a dark side. Rather than saying women shouldn’t compare themselves to goddesses, the article actually states that women aren’t worthy of goddess-like reverence. Apparently, we have to be perfect to be revered. That isn’t true of female deities from cultures around the globe. I’m going to show you how.

It is impeccable timing that I have the incredible Claire Wasserman with me today. Claire is the mastermind behind Ladies Get Paid, a program that connects women in business to other women to help bridge the knowledge gap. We’ve talked about the wage gap, the glass ceiling, and how women feel unable to negotiate. Well, now you are going to be connected to the resources that tell you how to fight it. Claire knows that many of these problems are systematic, but that doesn’t stop her from joining together communities of women to fight the system. What is beautiful about Ladies Get Paid is that the focus is on women taking agency and advocating for themselves.

It’s time for some things to change. Women should feel like they have a place in the workforce. Organizations like Ladies Get Paid are making that happen. Be a part of the change, and give this episode a listen.

What in the world has you feeling like shit? We all have our vices and our habits, but have you ever stopped to think that these habits we form over time might eventually stop serving our happiness? What if those things we think are protecting our happiness are actually making us feel like shit? We are women who feel deeply and want to embrace happiness, but there are things in our lives that keep us from going at happiness with everything that we’ve got. That is exactly what my friend and guest, Andrea Owen, is talking about in her new book How To Stop Feeling Like Shit

Are you ready for a truth bomb or two today? Andrea lays it all out there as she shares her toughest moments, her biggest heartbreaks, and then her mightiest triumphs. We get real about numbing mechanisms, the many faces of perfectionism, and what we can do about those things. It’s time for us to own our shit, and embrace the hard work of healing. Now is time to start. You’ll be ready after listening to this conversation with Andrea.

Are you curious about meditation? Or have you already tried doing it and found yourself becoming really frustrated? If so, today's show is just for you. We have a super inspiring interview today with Ali Smith, one of the co-founders and co-leaders of The Holistic Life Foundation. At the Holistic Life Foundation, they are bringing the skills of mindfulness to kids and this is having a very positive impact on them- and really quickly! Ali and his partners go out into the schools, both public and private, in the Baltimore area and they teach meditation. In the schools where they have introduced their mindfulness programs, the number of suspensions and detentions have been drastically reduced, with some schools even having zero suspensions, after instituting the program. This has brought The Holistic Life Foundation a whole lot of attention, over the last few years. Listen in now, to find out more.

Alex was really fortunate to have met Ali at Quad City's Health Conference in Iowa, at the beginning of 2017. Ali was taught to meditate, by his father at a very young age, but due to unforseen circumstances, his meditation practice fell by the wayside while he was still a child. When he was in his early twenties, he started searching for some answers and for a way to overcome his anxiety, so he started the process of mindfulness all over again. You're really going to love this interview, so listen in, to find out more about Ali and the awesome results of his Mindful Moment Program for schools.

In a Post-9/11 world, the threat of extremist terrorists is a concerning and much-politicized fear for many. We’ve all seen the movies and read the stories of counter-terrorism efforts by the CIA. It may come as a surprise to you, then, that the CIA’s real front man for many undercover anti-terror missions in the Middle East was not actually a man at all. Against all odds and expectations, Michelle Rigby Assad led many successful missions in a male-dominated field within a male-dominated culture. How in the world did she do it?

Today, I sit down with Michelle to talk about her upcoming book, Breaking Cover, where she shares how she became a CIA agent, used her knowledge of Arab culture and language to earn her spot in the Debriefing Room, and then go deep undercover over in the Middle East. It was always a little like walking a tightrope between knowing she was the right woman for the job, and dealing with the insecurities and self-doubt that many of us experience even in less dangerous situations. Michelle puts on display true empathy, honor, and intelligence, proving that your unique gifts are what make you invaluable, not your appearance and gender. I can’t wait for you to hear her incredible stories today as we navigate what it means to be a woman in the world.

Do you, as a woman, feel unsafe or unprotected in your body? Do you feel scared or anxious lately and find yourself eating too much and putting on weight? If so, it's hardly surprising, because there's a lot happening in the country right now, that makes us feel really vulnerable and there have been some shocking things happening in the news lately that we really need to talk about. Recently, a man in Michigan who raped a very young woman (a twelve-year-old girl, actually), has won joint custody of the child of the victim! This case is one the first of it's kind, however, due to there being no laws at all preventing rapists from asserting their parental rights over a child in seven states- including Michigan, this is unlikely to be the last. Listen in as Alex shares a little of what happened, in this outrageous example of how women are really left unprotected lately and of how women's rights really are under attack currently, with children even being thrown into the mix.

Are you a micro-managing Mama who feels ashamed that your outer success feels inauthentic to you?  Are you frustrated because you can't manage your own diet when you are managing a huge multi-million dollar portfolio for your company?  Or do you feel secretly jealous of the women who really seem to have it all figured out? If so, Alex can really relate! She 'had it all' and still couldn't relax.  She used to be a control freak and she really tried to do it all herself. She copied everyone's systems and followed the rules to the letter- she was a real Type A Girl and it worked, but only for a while. Then she would either sabotage herself, or things would just stop working. Listen in to find out what Alex discovered, about getting graceful with change and about what really will happen to you, if you unshackle your innate desires and start honoring your inner wildness.

Today’s show is about one of the most important rules I have learned in my life. Deliciously happy women have some uncommon skills, and today we are talking about validating yourself. I had to learn to validate my own damn self and it wasn’t an easy process. Why do we need validation from others? Why can’t we be content with our own validation? I had to learn to trust myself. I needed someone else to tell me that my thoughts and feelings were valid. I was trained to look outside myself for guidance. I was taught not to trust myself and to question my knowing. It’s a trap to always think we need someone else to tell us what is right and what we need to do.

If you've been listening to this show, you know that it's all about helping us, as women, to create our own rules in life...but why should we care about that? Well, there are many reasons and the truth of it is that most of us are really suffering, from trying to live life by someone else's rules. We tend to live with false beliefs that make our lives really hard, pulling us right out of alignment and causing us to live in an inauthentic way.

So, last week, Alex decided to put the question out on Facebook and Instagram, to find out from all you Rulers out there, which rules, norms or social constructs you see people following, that actually make them miserable. She got a really huge response, so listen in now, as she shares some of the rules that you, as listeners, would like to erase, or rewrite.

It was a really powerful experience and things became super clear, super fast and by the end of their two days together, her client really felt a life changing shift. She felt like a new person, reborn! So, if you're thinking of going away on a retreat, or working with a coach, Alex really encourages you to do it now, as she sees this time as the right time to do it.

How does love actually work? Is it really possible to fall in love with anyone? Today we're going into a powerful interview about love!

In today's interview with Mandy Len Catron, we are going to explore love on a really profound level. Mandy's written a book, which is a beautiful tale as well as a process that she managed to unearth, where you really can fall in love with anyone. Mandy has thirty-six questions in her process, that can be used to foster compassion, understanding, and connection with literally anyone. All of us can really use this powerful tool, in this day and age, to help us to connect with those we feel hatred or anger either from or towards. Alex really encourages you to listen in very carefully and with an open heart, as  Mandy talks about the book she wrote in 2015, which became a New York Times Modern Love Piece.  It's called How To Fall In Love With Anyone and it went insanely viral, being one of the most shared articles in The Times, that year.  In our current times, we really need to learn how to connect with the people who are different from us or the ones that we don't know much about. That is, ultimately, what will save us. Listen in now!

Stress, anxiety, deadlines--life’s unexpected twists and turns. When the universe hits you hard, it’s easy to want to turn to the things that comfort us. What better comfort could there be than food—the thing that sustains and re-energizes us. For those of you whose comfort-eating has turned to emotional eating, you might be dealing with skin problems, weight gain, and fatigue. You’ve tried diets, exercise regimens, and every pill on the market, and still nothing works. You find that if you have a bad day, you reach for the ice cream before you know what’s happening.

What’s the solution? Can there be an end to the emotional eating cycle? This week, Tricia Nelson, author, and reformed emotional eater talks about Healing Your Hunger. Tricia knows that there is a spiritual and mental root to our emotional eating that no diet plan could ever address. At one point in her life, Tricia was ready to give up. How well do you work with money? Do you struggle to keep within the limits of your budget? Or are you perhaps looking for a new and better way to earn a living? Today's guest, Amanda Steinberg, is the founder of Daily Worth.com. and she also has a brand new book out, called Worth It, which is all about money- her relationship with money, how to deal with money, her own personal journeys with money, all really fascinating and inspiring stuff. So, if wealth, financial planning, budgeting, or even the thought of making more money is something that's on your mind, you definitely want to listen to this!

As you know, Alex loves to talk about current events and how politics impacts on our feminine  lives.  Well, there really seems to be too much going on right now, to keep on top of it all. The closing of so many Planned Parenthood clinics is  like a plague sweeping across America at the moment. Did you know that the only abortion clinic in Kentucky is in danger of closing? That's something that's affecting the lives of millions of women and their ability to be healthy and to choose the direction of their own lives. As there is so much going on, Alex is encouraging you to go and listen to one of her favorite podcasts, called Hellbent. Hellbent is a twice a week, feminist politics podcast,  which goes into all the details of the stuff that Alex gives you the broader strokes on. So, go and check it out- it's really awesome!

With all of this going on, Alex has decided to talk about something good, today. It's so easy to focus on what's scary, or annoying, or exhausting, or even infuriating, but right now, we'll talk about gratitude, which is a really powerful, positive psychology tool. Alex wants our tribe to share some good things, so she starts off by reading some of them to you now, written by some of the members of Her Rules Radio Facebook Group, where there are currently over seventeen hundred women sharing about their lives! Listen in and become inspired by the really heartfelt gratitude messages that they have shared.

How do you decide that you are beautiful? What can you do in your life that makes you feel beautiful? These days, we are getting so many mixed signals about what makes a woman beautiful. Do you have, or have you had some issues with your nether regions? If so, today's episode is super important for you, as well as for all the other ladies out there, as Alex talks to Dr. Anna Cabeca about all things vulva health and offers you some real deal education on the subject. Listen in to learn some really important information about this often neglected subject.

Although your vulva may not really be a part of your body that you've given a lot of attention to, on today's show Alex goes into a number of pretty personal details about some issues that she's been having, that a lot of ladies also tend to have, with the dryness, the incontinence and the pain. Today's episode deals with your sexual and your hormonal health and Alex and Dr. Cabeca, who's been a woman's hormonal expert for years, talk about the stuff that tends to happen as you get older- and, quite interestingly, the stuff that seems to be happening to younger and younger women today. Today, they talk about what you can do to heal it and how to avoid it and get healthy and they will also be talking about the spiritual aspects of all of this. Listen in now, to hear this really great interview, where Dr. Cabeca and Alex discuss the foundations of what it means to be a happy, healthy woman, who is satisfied in her body.

Do you find yourself living in a way that someone else thinks you should? Does this fly in the face of the way you would actually live, without this kind of influence? If so, you're not alone and you will really gain a lot from today's show, which is all about how women can- and really need to- start living life by our own rules, in every aspect. It's about throwing off the 'shoulds' and learning to live your life in the way that you would choose to. Listen in today, as Alex helps you to discover your own way forward.

Today, Alex shares a very heartfelt and personal story about her experience with a client, Michelle. They were talking about Michelle's body, which in her private session with Alex, Michelle described as being built like a brick sh*t house. This prompted Alex to point out to her that the words that we use really do have power. When we use phrases and words to describe ourselves, those words and phrases actually become our reality and our world and we keep ourselves stuck there. So, it's time to flip these old worlds into something else. You need to learn, when stumbling across old, limiting beliefs, to reconstruct them with love and care, so as not to scare the life out of your brain! Alex cautions you, however, that if you try to make these changes too big, or too fast, your lizard brain could rear up and start fighting you, to keep your old thoughts in place, so you really have to start small, in order to make the changes long lasting

The new thought that Michelle agreed to try on in her daily life, was “I am strong, capable and I deserve the self-care that I desire.” Yet, for Alex, after ending the call, something still felt off... Then she realized that it was her own lizard brain, eating into her power and her ego and it had some really nasty things to say about her body, on a very regular basis. Although Alex acknowledges the privileges that she enjoys, being a white woman, relatively thin and quite tall, she still goes through her own struggles and pain with her body, as do all of us, because we've all been raised as women, to be judged by our bodies! So, she began to work on flipping her old beliefs about her body and turning them into manageable, self-loving affirmations. This felt good, but the imperfections became meaner and more difficult to acknowledge. Alex still persevered with taking her power back and she really encourages you to do the same, because it's really necessary and it's worth it! You really do need to rewrite the story around your beliefs about your body- now, and show up in the world centered, graceful, and wise!

Today, Alex will be interviewing Dr. Srini Pillay, a Harvard Neuroscientist and Coach, about his brand new and really inspiring book, Tinker, Dabble, Doodle, Try, which has just been nominated one of the fifty must reads by Coastal Living, for the second time. It's a beautiful exploration of creativity and what we think about being productive and how we're overworking ourselves to get more done, but it's really not working. It's about how our creativity really comes out of a space of spaciousness and doodling, in many ways. Listen in today, to get some of Dr. Pillay's really awesome tools to help you to get unstuck, keep moving forward and live by your own rules.

Would you like to learn how to talk about sex with your kids? And would you like to be able to have the conversation in a calm, open and educational tone?  This is something that a lot of parents really struggle with, even though they may be educated and open about sex in general. Today's show is a special edition, after the very first live event of Her Rules Radio, where Alex recorded an incredible panel discussion, in Brooklyn, New York City, titled Sex 101 For Parents. The two Sex Experts and Educators on the panel were Mal Harrison and Ekem Merchant. Listen in and find out how to talk to your kids in a way that will prepare them and let them know that sex does matter, but without putting too much judgment on it.

Mal Harrison is the founder of The Centre For Erotic Intelligence. She's a Clinical Sexologist and Coach, who has an amazing Ted Talk and she's also spoken around the world. She creates programs all over the country to help people to get right with sexuality and to be able to talk about it

Ekem has been working in Public Health for twenty years, with a focus on Adolescent and Women's Health and Community Health Centre training directly in schools- even at Alex's son's school. People tend to swarm to her with questions when they find out what she does, but she loves talking about it, so it's great!

Planned Parenthood is the nation's largest provider of sex education, reaching a million and a half people per year! They and the schools rely on the parents to be the backup at home and to help the kids to integrate what they are supposedly learning in schools. However, not all kids are getting the same education and this results in people learning so many different aspects and information about sex.

A few days ago, after the Bill Cosby trial had been dismissed, one of the jurors said that because one woman went to his house wearing a top which revealed her bare midriff, it implied consent. Alex nearly lost her mind when she heard that, as she sees that as rape culture at its worst! Rape culture blames the victim for enticing their rapist! This is why parents really need to learn to talk with their children about sex right now! Parents need to teach them that no matter what someone is wearing, you are not allowed to touch them without their consent and that you also need to listen to them during sexual or intimate activities. They need to know that no one has the right to cross your boundaries, abuse you or rape you because you're wearing revealing clothing.  This is why this topic is really so important. Alex points out that when you allow your children to believe that women are to blame for their rape, it leads to people becoming jury members later on, who uphold this sexual culture that makes either women or men who are the victims, blameworthy. Listen in now, to hear the panel discussion and to get some much-needed support around this really important issue.

I think we all have a list. That’s right, a F-It List. This List is not quite a Bucket List, where you check things off that you want to do before you die. Have you ever heard yourself saying: “I'm kinda clear about what I want, but I keep getting in my own way.” Or “I'm not sure what I want...” Or even “I don't know how I feel- I'm just confused.”? Well, today, Alex talks about the lack of clarity, the confusion and the self-sabotage that all women seem to experience. She attributes this to the fact that we, as women, have all been trained to minimize our thoughts, emotions and even our strengths and talents. Alex points out that we have shut ourselves down, in so many ways and for such a long time, that

Alex points out that we have shut ourselves down, in so many ways and for such a long time, that we have become completely out of practice with connecting with what is true and good. We're so disconnected that even our ability to create what we want and feel the way we'd like to feel has become severely damaged! Our ability to stop harming ourselves with negative thinking or bad eating habits has also been affected because it's all connected! Listen in to find out more.

Today, Alex talks about Minimize Me, which she explains, is such a big show topic, that she's turned it into a whole blog series. (You can access the blog on either www.alexandrajamieson.com, or on www.herrulesradio.com) The gist of it is that we're stuffing down our strengths, covering up our quirks and ignoring our truth! Do you know what it actually means for women to step into their power? This is really something that needs to be considered when you look at the frightening and  dangerous things that are going on for women in Texas at the moment. The Texas lawmakers are trying to make it even harder for women to have control over their bodies and their lives, by attempting to make it illegal to drive a woman to a safe abortion provider!

According to a study done by the University of Texas recently, in the six years since Planned Parenthood and other safe abortion providers and women's health clinics there have been de-funded, the death rate in maternal health has doubled. This de-funding has also resulted in the closure of more than eighty clinics, most of which were in rural areas where no alternative care facilities have been provided. This means that in the two years since the cuts were implemented, the remaining health clinics in the state of Texas are only able to serve half the women who were being taken care of before.

Alex points out that de-funding Planned Parenthood and making safe abortions harder to obtain does not stop abortion. It only stops safe abortion. This is why Alex refers to woman's health as a revolution. It's a battle being waged every day and women's lives are at risk! This is what prompted her to give a talk at The Women's Empowerment Expo in Washington DC on the Memorial Day weekend. Listen in today, as Alex gives you a brief overview of the talk that she gave at the Expo, called The Foundations of Women's Power.

In the next couple of weeks, I will be launching a Patreon campaign for Her Rules Radio. There will be different levels of support, but we have lots of exciting bonuses coming your way!

Years ago in college, I investigated some women’s health clinics for a newspaper article and found several fake ones, who only provided misinformation. Then I went to a Planned Parenthood clinic. Boy, talk about a world of difference in the quality of the information, as well as in the level of respect and dignity with which I was treated! Not judgment, no pressure, just the facts!

There is a disturbing trend going on right now, where many states are trying ban abortion - a further assault on women’s health in our country! Today is a show that isn’t about politics. It’s about women and their health. It’s about being able to make choices about your health and family that are in the best interests of your family. Women of color are disproportionately affected by abortion, further keeping many families trapped in poverty.

This week’s interview is with Dr. Willie Parker, the author of Life’s Work - A Moral Argument for Choice. He grew up in a Christian home in the deep South. As a Doctor, he realized that in order to show true Biblical compassion to women, he needed to provide abortion services. His journey has been a transformative one, as he eventually left his Obstetrics practice and gave up his penthouse in Hawaii, to begin life in the deep South as an itinerant abortion provider traveling between Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Listen to his amazing interview as he beautifully lays out the moral case for compassion through choice.

Did you know that playing takes you out of your head and encourages your body to recover? Would you like to know about the science behind all of that? Then join Alex today as she starts the show with the story of how she helped a client, who was struggling with Chronic Overload Stress, to become more playful and resultantly more relaxed and successful in her life. Listen in as Alex encourages you to include more play in your day and shares seven science-based ways that play helps you to feel great, in and about your body.

Today's guest is Dr. Leslie Tidwell, a board certified OB.Gyn and the creator of Savvy Lady Patient.com. Leslie realized that she could positively affect women's lives by working with them differently, rather than seeing them in her office. She's created a way for women to have a better, more educated, personalized experience when they go to the doctor. Listen in today, as she talks to Alex about how any woman can get ready for her next appointment so that she feels strong and confident and armed with the correct information.

Today, Leslie talks to Alex about:

  • Her website and service, Savvy Lady Patient.com- what it is and why she created it.
  • How women are often blown off by doctors (both male and female) and told that they're being overly emotional, or even hysterical.
  • How the paternalistic attitude revealed it to herself to her when she went into private practice and was even directed towards her at times when conferring with male doctors.
  • How being a female doctor and a woman of color influenced how people viewed her as an authority.
  • The appalling behavior that she has experienced from some male surgeons.
  • The reasons that women seek Leslie's help through Savvy Lady Patient.com.
  • About the Appointment Prep that she offers to women and how that helps and empowers them when they go in to see the doctor.
  • Some tips for you, as a woman, to be better prepared when going to see a doctor.

Are you worried about the effects of screen time on yourself, your kids, or your relationship? If so, you're not alone. Listen in today and find out all about Delaney and about how you can make it work for your family in this modern day and age.

Today, Alex starts out talking about how women and men cope very differently with stress. This comes up a lot for her with her coaching and on today's show she shares some of the findings of a study done by Shelley Taylor, which explain why, during stressful times, men usually demonstrate the fight or flight response, while women are inclined to tend and befriend. Listen in as Alex shares a really fun way to cope with this and find out how you can play your way to experiencing less stress.

If you would love to break the shackles of yo-yo dieting once and for all, or to finally put an end to your diet spiral, you will really gain a lot from today's show, with Alex's super smart guest, Isabel Foxen Duke, a Health Coach who graduated with Alex, from the Institute For  Integrative Nutrition. Listen in today and find out about Isabel's outlook on body positivity and how you too can develop a positive outlook towards your own body image.

Isabel was put on her first diet at around three years of age, by her pediatrician, who clearly had no idea how it would affect her later in her life. That was the beginning of what would become a life long obsession for her. When Alex met Isabel, she was just kicking off with her program, Stop Fighting Food. Now, Isabel helps women to stop feeling crazy around food, which is how she felt for most of her life, until she began to learn many things that are not taught conventionally, about emotional and binge eating and the ways that they affect women.

Isabel explains that the sad reality of many dieters lives is that with any rigid attempt to control your body, it will only be a matter of time before you violently lose control and start eating anything that you can get your hands on. She vividly describes the cycle of determination to diet, followed by 'losing it' and falling off the wagon

On today's show, she talks about how it felt for her, when she fell off the wagon and the about the physical and emotional pain one experiences as a result of yo-yo dieting. She also discusses how landing up in treatment for Binge Eating Disorder was the beginning of her journey towards learning what it means to have a  health-full and balanced relationship with food and how this learning involved un-learning much of what she had been conditioned with, through being so engaged with the diet industry for so many years.  Listen in and find out more.
