Her Rules Radio

Welcome to Her Rules Radio! The Crave Cast, which I have been broadcasting and podcasting under for the past two years will now forever be known as Her Rules Radio, where women go to get the support and inspiration to make life by their own rules. This means we won’t be playing by their rules anymore. We won’t be trying to be good girls all the time. We must shake off the cultural beauty standards, the rules about food, relationships, and living that keep us stuck and afraid of change. The world needs more happy, strong, independent women who love themselves.

I took a big step in transforming The Crave Cast to Her Rules Radio and it’s a little scary. We have grown into an incredible community here and in our free Facebook group but it was time to change. I was afraid that I would lose some of my listeners by making this change and slightly the direction of the podcast. But being afraid of change is keeping so many of us stuck. Her Rules Radio is about creating the life you love, feeling great in your body, feeling great about yourself in your unique way. Here is the manifesto of Her Rules Radio, we are the playfully proud women who say yes, we love our bodies just the way we are. We are the women who know how to have fun and we don’t apologize for going after it. 

Just to give you a bit of a sneak peek, I am hosting a live open house of my brand-new website this week December 29, 2016. If you are around and want to hang out with me I can show you around the new website. Then on Saturday, December 31,2016, New Year’s Eve I am hosting a live two-hour in-person workshop for only 20 women and several of those seats are already gone! This is the best future self-workshop that I taught last year. On January, the 1st I will be hosting that same workshop live as a webinar. More exciting news, the cravings cleanse is now open! Welcome to the soon-to-be-renamed Crave Cast. We will shortly be called Her Rules Radio, so look for that coming soon. This weekend I gave a lecture at a conference here in NYC. I was talking about what cravings mean to the female athlete, and how to deal with it. I started off my talk by saying that we can’t talk about any aspect of Women’s Health if don’t acknowledge that being a woman does not feel safe in our society. It’s true, and until we begin to get our arms around all the reasons we don’t feel safe, then it’s useless to talk about Women’s Health and Well-being. 

 

We live in a patriarchy and it affects us on a bio-chemical level. If you are struggling with any body issues, examine how you may have suffered or been the victim of abuse, and get to the root of the problem. Welcome! I’m so grateful that you’re here and spending time with me today! We’re changing our name, did you hear? The Crave Cast will become Her Rules Radio in the very near future. Let’s check in on how Thanksgiving went, so how did it go? I gave you a couple of episodes in the weeks before Thanksgiving to help you deal with any of the pitfalls you may encounter over the holiday. My Thanksgiving turned into a “Friendsgiving” and we cooked all day and had friends over and the food was awesome! We had a 10 hour celebration and we got to enjoy time with friends. I love having a cozy day at my home, surrounded by people that I love.

I first became aware of anger snacking in my own life. To be honest, it was during the time I was going through my divorce. I noticed it when I was so mad that I was crunching my way through a family sized bowl of popcorn. I was mad and was destroying things with my teeth. I crunched my way through snack after snack after snack. I wanted to act out in so many ways, but that wasn’t appropriate so I just crunched and crunched. Yep, you get the idea. That’s what we are talking about today!

I’ll have to admit, in these last few weeks I have been tested. My gratitude has been tested. I started this podcast because I know that the pursuit of women’s health is a worthy pursuit. I shared my feelings in an episode after the election and received some pretty strong critiques from you. It’s so hard for women to have a safe place. We are always being judged and it takes its toll on our bodies and our minds. My comments in the show after the episode was that many women were feeling unsafe. Many women were feeling triggered by the sexism being displayed. I even encouraged women to take a self-defense class. I’m doing that and empowering myself to take control and feel powerful. I recommended getting together with other women and supporting each other.

 

I received some of the meanest comments that I have ever received. I was surprised by the anger that women were using so much anger in these comments. I was told I was being melodramatic. I was told to stop re-victimizing myself. I was criticized and told that there was nothing to be afraid of and I was just stoking fear.

 

I responded to every woman and asked them to start listening to and responding to other women in a different way. My goal is not to have anyone leave the group, but we have to keep having conversations and actually hearing each other.

 

In other news, The Crave Cast will be changing to a different name in the near future. It’s going to be called Her Rules! It will still be me interviewing great people, but we will just be called a different name. The mission is still the same and we have so much in store for you!

 

Today’s guest is Sam Bennett. She’s the author of a new book “Start Right Where You Are” and she also has another book called “Get It Done”. She is a writer, speaker, actor, teacher and creativity/productivity specialist. Welcome back to the crave cast and to episode 112! We have a couple of great guests today. First we will chat with Melissa Ramos, women’s health expert from Canada. Melissa focuses on Chinese nutrition therapy and owner of “Sexy Food Therapy Inc”. She helps women feel sexy from the inside out focusing on digestion and hormone imbalances. We are going to talk about the disturbing trend that is effecting millions of people in America, prescription drug addiction. It’s shocking how many people are using and abusing opioids these days. We need to address the root causes of the addiction. Melissa and I will go into the disconnection with community, lack of support and the overwhelming stress in people’s lives. 

Then I will have on Dr. Anna Cabeca, a good friend and hormonal expert. Anna is a board certified OBGYN and a regenerative antiaging medicine expert. Today we are going to be talking about women’s worth, women’s health and women’s financial being. It’s important to have a handle on all of these things. But first I want to talk about Donald Trump, pussy gate and what happened when that tape was released when Billy Bush and Donald Trump were talking about women’s bodies. I think pussy gate is a good thing. Why? Because it’s getting this conversation out of the shadows and into the open. We need to talk about how we talk about women’s bodies. I don’t have a problem with the word pussy. In fact, you can go back two episodes and listen to my interview with Regena Thomashauer and hear about her book “Pussy: A Reclamation.”

 We need to reclaim our bodies! Your body is your own and you don’t have to put up with someone bigger or stronger than you doing things you don’t like. The word pussy was not what is so offensive. It’s women being abused, touched etc. and that this is looked upon as a joke. This leads to body shaming, women feeling like something is wrong with them if something is being said about them. This abusive rape culture that we live in has a real effect on women’s lives! When we don’t feel worthy in our bodies we don’t feel worthy to ask for that raise or promotion. When someone else more powerful takes advantage of us physically, we feel inferior and therefore we may not feel capable of understanding finance. So what happened last week with Trump and Billy Bush was disgusting. We need to take advantage of it and talk about this.

The interview we have today takes this one step further. We are going to talk about how this body shaming, sexual culture and how is it having a real dollars and cents effect on women’s income. I am going to be interviewing my dear friend Belinda Rosenbaum. We have known each other for years. Belinda is the CEO of a company called “OwnYourMoney.com.” There are a lot of money experts out there but Belinda is different. She doesn’t just give you money tactics she helps you with the inner game.

On today’s show we will be talking about the pill, actually, a book called “Sweetening the Pill” by Holy Grigg-Spall. In the interview, Holly and I talk about my experience with birth control and how scary it was. The reason I want to talk about this today is because millions of healthy women take a powerful drug every day, from mid-teens to menopause. Few know the effects or potential side effects. 

Contrary to cultural myth, birth control pills impact every organ and function of the body and yet most women don’t even think of it as a drug. Depression, anxiety, rage, panic attacks, are just a few of the effects of being on the pill. When the pill was first released, it was thought that women would not submit to taking a medication when they weren’t sick. Now the pill is making women sick! Holly Grigg-Spall’s book that we are going to talk about has inspired a documentary! Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein, the producers of “The Business of Being Born” are producing a new documentary, and Holly is the consulting producer and writer. This is a great book and great interview. If you are on birth control pills or any other hormonal birth control, you will definitely want to listen to this episode!

Welcome back to the Crave Cast! Today I will be talking about the 3 mindset tricks for any cleanse or detox, diet, exercise etc. Mindset is everything! That’s why I fell in love with positive psychology. A funny example of this comes from my kid from this past weekend. My husband and I decided that we love musicals so much that we wanted to show my kid. We started with “Chorus Line”. My kid fell in love with this, especially the number where there is acrobatics. My son decided he needed to start working out to be like the actor/dancer he saw in that number. He did a lot of push-ups, sit-ups and other exercises on Saturday. On Sunday, he came to me and told me that when he exercises that it makes his stomach hurt. I explained to him that this is normal and that sometimes you will be sore to get what you really want in life. This was a great mindset moment for us! Today on the Crave Cast I am interviewing Jennifer Grayson. She is an author of a new book called: Unlatched: The Evolution of Breastfeeding and the Making of Controversy. Breastfeeding is certainly a controversy here in the United States. We have an incredibly large international diverse population but her book and the topic it covers is so interesting. Her book really dives into the history of breastfeeding and the trouble that women in America of having with it and the different topics around it. Jennifer is an environmental journalist, Huffington Post columnist and her work has appeared in several publications. After having her own children, her lifetime commitment to restore the vanishing connection to the natural world led her to her research for Unlatched. This week we are starting something new on the Crave Cast. A lot of you, including me, have a spiritual bent. Many of us are curious about spirit, we pray, we meditate, we connect to the earth, we have our own version of connection with something bigger. So I decided to have my dear friend Monica Kenton on the show. I call Monica when I need a little spiritual re-tuning. I asked Monica if she would be part of an experiment and be our spiritual guide. Help us bring more spiritual energy into our lives whether its God, the Universe, Spirit or whatever you call it. Monica agreed to come on the show once a month to tell us her perspective and help guide us a little bit. She is a wonderful spiritual mentor and trained in several different modalities from ancient wisdom, modern day spiritual practices, trained as a shaman and she is very socially conscience. She really wants to help people make a life they love while making a difference to the planet. Monica is going to tell us what’s happening right now and what are the energies of August and what actions can we take from this spiritual guidance to really awesome results. Welcome back! We are almost at episode 100! So amazing. It has been a big week for the female body. Jennifer Aniston, the popular actress put out an incredibly popular post in Huffington Post last week and spoke out against the appearance based celebrity gossip culture. She was fed up! I agree with her 100 percent. We get to determine our happily ever after for ourselves. I don’t know why it’s still controversial that women get to choose what the deal with my body is, whether I want to get married, have children or whether or not I say I’m beautiful. Maybe put an end to the obsessed diet and shame body culture that we live in. We have to talk about this! We should talk about the celebrity obsession and the impact that social media has on our body image and our ability to connect with ourselves and other people. 

I will be interviewing my good friend Christine Hassler. She is a wonderful coach. She uses life coaching techniques and spirituality but she started out as a Hollywood agent at the age of 25. She went through her own healing journeys and ended up writing a couple of books. I have to say that we have only hung out only a few times in person but kept up with each other virtually. She is just a really supportive person. When I went through my concussion she called me and offered help and suggestions. Today she supports individuals all over the world discover life’s big questions. Welcome back to episode 97! I’m Alex Jamieson. In the last week or two it feels like the world is on fire. Videos of people being shot and killed, snipers killing policeman and women in the line of duty. Rage and hope filling the streets, tears, anger and sadness. It feels like a lot! I was in Arizona to see a doctor and because I was in a car I was listening to the news a lot. I was feeling sad and angry and feeling really lost. It was Sunday night after I got back to the city that I was able to talk to people I was close to, people that I love. I think that was the only thing I knew how to do. I am so pleased and heartened and hopeful to have Ayesha Meriweather on the show this week and to talk about how we are really feeling and honoring the anger and really listening to each other. 

Sometimes I think that’s all that we can really do to heal is really listen. That’s listening to our bodies, listening to ourselves, honoring what we see, not judging it or making it bad. Just listen! We just need to listen to each other. Sometimes that’s hard to do because we want to have the answers. Ayesha and I talk about that in this interview. We want to have it figured out and have the answers but we don’t always have that. We are not always perfect in how we say things but your intention matters!

Welcome back to the Crave Cast! We are talking about women in Hollywood and the roles of women on the big screen. The way that women are represented in Hollywood in our hyper-social media culture shapes how women are represented in society. Quite frankly, right now women are not represented well in these areas. There is gender pay inequality which came out as a result of a hack of Sony. It was leaked that Jennifer Lawrence made much less than her male co-stars in the same film. She made public statements about this and has learned to be a tougher negotiator on her own behalf. 

 

Reports show that in 2014, 85% of films had no female directors, 80% of films had no female writers, 78% had no female editors and 92% had no female cinematographer. How can this be? What this means that virtually all of our movie consumption is from the male perspective, from the male point of view, and women are not adequately represented in viewpoint, or in content in the majority the films we watch today.

 

We want to create a world that is more equal, and we need more women’s voices telling those stories. Women make up only 13% of screenwriters in UK films and only 8% of directors in the UK. So the situation isn’t unique to American culture. It took Pixar 15 years to create a female lead in one of their films. There is only 1 female role for every 3 roles in family films. So yo can see how prevalent the issue is and we need women to be represented in a more balanced way in our popular culture. Women only make up 5% of characters in political power. What does this tell little girls about their future?

 

Geena Davis is a powerful Hollywood activist on a quest to improve the representation of women on our screens. Today’s interview is with Alysia Reiner. She’s an actress and has the role of Fig in OITNB. She’s also filming Better Things right now, and she plays DA Parks in How to Get Away with Murder. She’s everywhere right now! She’s a producer for Equity, a film that is the first female Wall Street film starring Alysia Reiner. She loves the role of a change maker and she’s committed to helping women have equal representation in film, politics, business and the home. You are going to love this interview with Alysia Reiner.

She has written for “O” the Oprah magazine and she is the host of a show that we will talk about more where she goes and interviews famous people and entrepreneurs and follows them around. It’s really cool! Her latest book is really interesting. It’s called “When She Makes More: The Truth about Navigating Love and Life for a New Generation of Women.” We are going to talk about money and our relationship with money in our relationships and how traditional gender roles can sometimes make money more complicated. Today’s guest is Miki Agarwal. Miki Agrawal is a force of nature. She was named 2015 Social Entrepreneur of the Year at the World Technology Awards and her Company THINX was named Time Magazine’s “25 Best New Inventions of 2015″. Miki was also the recipient of the TriBeCa Film Festival’s “Disruptive Innovation Award” and was named one of the “Top 20 Millenials on a Mission” by Forbes.

Welcome back my Clan of the Crave Bears! It’s episode 92, and it’s the second in a 2 part series for Fitness Week! I had some really good feedback on episode 91 from my Facebook group. Our relationships with our bodies and exercise kept coming up in conversations in the group. The all or nothing thinking or perfectionism, keeps many people from even attempting to exercise. You feel like if it can’t be perfect, then why even attempt it. Lack of time and motivation were also factors in exercise. Many people mentioned that they are too tired to exercise, but feel like they wouldn’t be as tired if they had the energy to exercise. It’s a vicious cycle - a catch 22! Don’t even get me started on the Biggest Loser - please stop watching it! It is toxic. Extreme exercise and extreme dieting - it’s a shame based TV show.

 

It’s time to stop looking to extreme dieting and extreme behavior as a way to control our weight. We need better options. Today’s guest is Erin Studland. She is a dear friend and she is a dancer, an actor, etc and she was able to use dance as an access point for spirituality. She created a powerful style of movement called Shrink Session. It’s such a fun workout. She uses the positive psychology of language and movement and it’s really fun.

Welcome back my Clan of the Crave Bears! Happy June! I’ve now been married for 2 and a half weeks and all is well. I am seeing a lot of people having stress and anxiety about summer dress and swimsuit season. A couple of times a year, I spend a little bit of time talking about fitness. Body confidence and fitness is so critically important to women.

In other news, I had my first bone density scan a little while ago. My results came in a little low. I have several of the risk factors for osteoporosis and osteopenia. I have low thyroid function, which is under control now, but the risk factors are still there. Use of some steroids and also gut issues that effect the absorption of minerals can also increase risk for this. I just want to be able to be active for as long as I possibly can.

 

Inactivity can increase your risk. Staying active can actually strengthen your bones. Diet is an important factor in bone development. Green veggies, nuts and seeds are all great sources of calcium. You need to have a high alkaline diet in order to make the best use of calcium in your diet. The Standard American Diet is highly acidic. Cutting out soda is one of the best things you can do to reduce your acidity. An acidic environment will draw out calcium from your bones to balance the acidity, thus weakening your bones.

 

Skip the alcohol, caffeine and sodas! When you get clear on the damage you are doing to your bones, the sacrifice is worth it. Everything we do in the Cravings Cleanse gets you towards a more alkaline environment in your body.

Welcome my Clan of the Crave Bears! Today we are talking about confidence, putting our best face forward, and the pressure on women to look as young as possible. Dr. Anthony Youn is our guest today, and I’ll be honest, I have struggled with whether to bring you this show or not. Do I really want to encourage plastic surgery? Dr. Youn is a leading plastic surgeon, and I happened to read his book and I agreed with about 98% of the book. It’s called The Age Fix and it is really good. He talks about how to feed yourself so that your skin looks and feels great. He shares so many non-surgery options and I completely agree with that.

 

He became interested in plastic surgery because he had an overgrowth of his chin, and he actually had plastic surgery to correct it as a young man. His experience with plastic surgery has shaped his career. I think you will enjoy this episode. I will say that he did make a comment about antibiotics in the episode and I probably wouldn’t take antibiotics. But that’s the only thing I didn’t agree with him.

 

I also got married last weekend! We had about 120 people there in the park to bless us for our wedding. It was such a lovely time! There are so many psychological benefits of witnessing the rites of passage, and the blessing of each other. You actually release oxytocin and this is a very healthy thing for each of us. It creates a community when you bring people together around a rite of passage event! I was in awe and cried the entire time. It was beautiful. I was thrilled to be able to introduce my friends to each other! Seeing them appreciate each other was good for my soul.

Welcome back my Clan of the Crave Bears! I'm getting married next week! Yes, I am. We just wanted something low-key and stress-free, so we are getting married at the park a couple blocks from home and then walking to our favorite neighborhood restaurant for our favorite meal - brunch! It's an exciting time and we just really want it to be a special time with our family and friends.

This past weekend I went to a couple of seminars for my own benefit and wow, was it intense! I had a family constellations workshop, with really allowed me to connect with my family lineage and work through emotions and habits, and it was very nice. Then it was off to a Tantric Yoga class, which was definitely more intense, but a great way to spend a Sunday.

 I wanted to talk with you about two things today, I’ve  got a great interview with my dear friend: Dr. Anna Cabeca coming up, ah, Dr. Anna is an amazing hormone expert, I’m so thrilled to have her on the show, but she’s also kinda on my board of advisors, I meet with her and also a couple of other women, and couple times a month we do a Skype date and we talk about our businesses and how we can support each other, and I’m always learning so much from her, so be sure to stay tuned through the end, cause we’re gonna be talking about menopause and hormones and even if you’re not in menopause or pre or peri-menopause, what you can be doing now, so that your hormones are balanced, so that you feel good, so that you can get rid of your brain fog, huge, huge topic so stay through to the end with my interview with Dr. Anna Cabeca.

Welcome to episode 87. Just had my Mothers’ Day celebration!   It’s May in New York City! I was teaching at a retreat from Friday and Saturday and came back early morning to be with family. Cooked pancakes with the kids and had breakfast, played video games together. Went out to get my acupuncture – one of my favorite and absolutely necessary healthcare habits. I go at least once a week, pay $30. Then woke up from my needle nap to have tea with a dear girlfriend. We had some nice iced beverage. I bought healthy snacks and stuffed them in my bag and then went to  the movie theatre to meet my kids.  I usually take my organic popcorn. If the theatre had healthy snacks, I’d buy them.  We went and saw The Avengers, Captain America, Captain Marvel. I’m a big Marvel comics fan.  It was fun! I had some alone time, some friend time, and some kid time.

Welcome! It’s Mama Mojo Month! It’s May, so we are focused on Mamas and all the things that we can do to take care of them. From menu’s and cooking strategies, we have it all for Moms. So on the home front, I took a solo vacation last weekend. I went to Sag Harbor and have a wonderful weekend. My husband, Bob was so supportive of me taking this time to recharge. Did I mention that Dirty Dancing is the best movie ever! It was awesome all over again. So it was a great weekend, and I feel great after taking a little time for myself!

Welcome my Clan of the Crave Bears! I know your life is incredibly busy, so it means so much that you are spending this time with me.

 

Today we are going to be talking about Katie Dalebout’s new book, Let It Out - A Journal Through Journaling. One of the things we have talked so much about is a gratitude practice. Having a gratitude practice is a strength and it allows you to open up your mind to hope, positive thoughts, and learning.

Although I believe in a gratitude practice and I even have a gratitude jar in my kitchen, I know that there can be a downside to gratitude. Negativity bias is something we will talk about and how it can actually benefit us in some ways, but it can also rule us. A gratitude practice can counteract your negativity bias. 

Gratitude is not a panacea - it’s not a cure all. We don’t want to overdose on gratitude. Writing down 10 gratitudes a day might make you feel like you failed if you can’t come up with 10. There is no such thing as “more is better” in the gratitude department. So, set realistic goals for your gratitude.

You may not realize that you can also fail to recognize your own role in your success. Thanking everyone else, while downplaying your own contribution isn’t great for your self-esteem. So pick one day and time each week that you will journal your gratitude. Write down 3 things you are grateful for, AND write down YOUR contribution to that success. It isn’t luck, and it isn’t being in the right place at the right time. Recognize your own awesomeness!

Hello my Clan of the Crave Bears! Can you believe we are coming up on a year and a half in the podcast? Time has flown. To give you an update if you’ve been listening, my main squeeze Bob is having spinal surgery next week. He’s been having a hard time, so I’ll be glad for him to get back to feeling better. He’s been in pain for so long, and not knowing what is wrong, and it’s been a really hard time for all of us. Being a care taker is hard, and these hard times are when it’s easy to get out of the good habits you’ve created.

 

One of my toxic habits…….sugar, has been an indulgence for my emotional cravings lately. I’m going to be getting off sugar soon, and then I will eventually bring it back in healthy doses. 

 

Check out my favorite Cravings Cleanse Spiced Rice Pudding:

 

2 c. cooked rice

2 c. unsweetened almond or coconut milk

1/2 c. organic raisins

1 2 t. cinnamon

1 to 2 cardamom

1 t vanilla extract

1 pinch sea salt

5 drops liquid Stevia extract

 

Cook in a pot over medium heat. Simmer then reduce to low for 5 minutes. Cover and let the liquids absorb into the rice. Once liquid is absorbed, dig in.

Hello my Clan of the Crave Bears! I’m so glad you decided to join me again today. I have a ton of stuff going on right now. My husband, Bob has had a rough week battling some crippling pain, and after a trip to the ER, a shot and then later a visit to the Dr., we found out that he has a bulging, ruptured disc in his back! So, we may be looking at some surgery soon. It’s just such a helpless feeling to not be able to do anything for him to make the pain better. It’s taxing to be a care taker, and I have to say I’m pretty beat! I sure will be glad when he’s feeling better.

Hello my Clan of the Crave Bears! I’m so glad you decided to join me today. Today I’m getting real with you, so consider yourself warned. I had an experience recently that I have been waiting to share with you, so today I am taking the opportunity.

I was on Fox News a couple of weeks ago with Dr. Manny. He called my work “horse shit” to my face. Here’s what happened:

  • I sat down with Dr. Manny and I immediately felt like he was not into my opinions
  • I immediately tried to build rapport and I tried to even get him to laugh
  • His final comment to me about cravings was, “That was very entertaining!”
  • I wasn’t there to entertain, because Women’s health issues are so important to me
  • After the segment, I tried to brush off his “entertaining” comment
  • I even got him to agree to take a selfie with me
  • After we took the selfie, he said, “Well, that was all horse shit!”
  • My head was spinning - I knew he would have never said the same thing to a man
  • The female producer who booked the show was shocked to hear this
  • Last year I was on Dr. Oz last year and he could barely contain his eye roll
  • Men believe women are weak, silly and emotional and they dismiss our true needs
  • The dismissive attitudes are exactly what women face everyday 
  • The unexamined gender bias in medicine is killing us
  • I have so many examples of women’s medical disorders being dismissed by health practitioners

Welcome back my clan of the crave bears! Today I will be interviewing Melissa Ambrosini about her new book called “Mastering your Mean Girl: The No-BS Guide to Silencing your Inner Critic and Becoming Wildly Wealthy, Fabulously Healthy and Bursting with Love”. Before we talk about how we beat ourselves up I want to share a little about our inner mean girl and how it comes out on girl on girl and woman on woman bullying. I see it a lot in the media and on social media and talking with Melissa about how we beat ourselves up I think it speaks volumes about our culture and how we are hard on other women. 

Girls bully differently than boys. Generally, you would think that bullying is more physical but girls are much more emotional and strategic about it. They can be quietly kind of vicious. We have this idea that bullies come from abuse or bad homes or have low self-esteem but really bullies have a superior sense of self and they are highly confident in their abilities. So how can we help our kids to not become bullies or stand up against bullies? Staying quiet and being complacent and not saying anything is giving the bully its staying power.

Many people believe that if they step up and confront a bully they will become a target. Bullies don’t like to be confronted. Bullies are about control and stepping in and confronting them it threatens their sense of power. You can try and defuse a bully by trying to joke about something to get the bully’s mind on something else or just act bored. These acts can defuse a bully without being confrontational. Hello my clan of the crave bears! Welcome back! On today’s show we are going to be talking about what our cravings are for speaking our truth. Our desires for sharing our big ideas and how challenging it is, especially for women. We women are afraid to speak up and say what we need. We are so use to being that person that everyone else needs. It’s so hard especially as women which is why I wanted to have Tara Mohr on the show.

Tara Mohr’s new book “Playing Big” is so good. I love this book! She is an expert on women’s leadership and well-being. She helps women play bigger in sharing their voice and bringing forward their ideas into work and into life. So the great thing about Tara Mohr is that I loved this interview so much and I loved her book so much that I said to her that I would love to give a free copy of her book to all my swag bag winners this year.

Hello my Clan of the Crave Bears! It’s March 2016! Can you believe it?! I just got back from a “mom-cation”! I really needed to unplug. I went camping for a week in Joshua woods in California. I slept great. I got about 8 to 10 hours of sleep and still watched the sun rise. Today’s episode is all about sleep. 

Our guest, Shawn Stevenson is the bestselling author of “Sleep Smarter” and founder of one of my favorite podcasts, number one health podcast on iTunes: The Model Health Show. He graduated from the University of Missouri. Stevenson studied business, biology and kinesiology. He founded Advanced Integrative Health Alliance: a company that provides health services to individuals and businesses worldwide. On today’s show we are going to talk about a very special form of movement that address our root cravings for movement. I talk about the four root causes of our cravings, what we want, how we relate to food and our bodies. That is bacterial, nutritional, emotional and physical. I’m going to be talking to Rochelle Schieck, the founder of Qoya dance. Qoya dance is a freeform, feminine dance class. I took my first dance class last summer with one of my friends. I invited some lady friends over and we had a dance class up on my roof deck which was so cool, under the moon and the sun was going down. It was so fun! It was this totally freeform, emotional, liberating, grounding, incredible movement experience! It reminded me of how much our bodies want to move and need to move for us to feel good.

We really do crave movement! Sadly, most of us have an f’ed up relationship with exercise and movement because it’s something we should do. We live in this masculine mindset about exercise that we should power through or push ourselves. Unfortunately, this can lead to total burnout! Movement has such an impact on our mood and well-being. I know you want to feel good in your body at every age and at every size. It’s hard to motivate yourself to exercise in a painful or boring way. Your body and soul really crave experience that’s filled with play and fun and intention and leaves you enlivened and not depleted.

In our interview, Rochelle is an author of a brand new book called “Qoya: a compass for navigating an embodied life that is wise, wild and free”. Rochelle loves to move. She started dancing as a little girl growing up in Minnesota until she moved on to her hero’s journey to her calling and her love of movement and her willing to explore compelled her to spend fifteen years exploring the world. As a teacher and a student all over the world she began instructing yoga styles for all ages and abilities, different dance modalities and in the last ten years she has led over 4000 movement classes! She has facilitated hundreds of private sessions and takes women on over twenty retreats on six continents. Not Antarctica yet! Her passion to explore the emerging essence of the feminine in her own life, then in movement coupled with her experience as a personal trainer, massage therapist, energy healer has all influenced her creation of this movement system: Qoya.

Today on the show I am going to be talking about chewing your food with Robyn Youkillis! Robyn wrote this amazing book called, Go with your Gut, that is half cookbook with vegan and paleo recipes and talks about the connection between your gut and your “gut instinct”. Most people don’t realize that they are not in the moment when they are eating so they just keep eating and eating. Robyn explains that if you just take time to look at what you’re eating, breathe and chew your food until its mush your digestive system or “gut” will be much happier.

At a young age she struggled and had an unhealthy outlook on food. She saw her mother hide food from her dad and then saw her dad sneaking food.  She talks about her ups and downs, “good and bad rollercoaster” journey. She went from eating less junk and losing weight to eating out of boredom and eating the wrong things. She attended The Institute for Integrative Nutrition and really spent a few years after graduation really trying different healthy foods and trying to find what worked for her in changing her relationship with food.

Hello my clan of the crave bears! It’s Alex here with episode number 72! In today’s episode I want to talk about the feeling of overwhelm that I have been experiencing, many of my friends and so many of you my readers and listeners been dealing with. It comes with frustration and anxiety this overwhelm. We are just at the beginning of month two on 2016 and so many people have come to me saying they are so anxious, so stressed out. How is this possible? I am supposed to feel rejuvenated at the beginning of the year. How do I deal with this? Today’s episode is for you if you are dealing with stress, anxiety, overwhelm. 

My guest today is a dear friend: Pedram Shojai the founder of well.org, editor of Be More magazine (that I have appeared in) and is the author of “Rise and Shine” and co-host of the podcast, The Health Bridge, and producer of the movie “Vitality” and the upcoming film “Origins”. Pedram wrote a book that is coming out this week called “The Urban Monk: Eastern wisdom and modern hacks to stop time and find happiness, success and peace”. Pedram has a very interesting life story.

He is trained as a chiropractor, he is also a Taoist priest, a doctor of oriental medicine, he studied kung Fu. He is a fierce global green warrior! He just has all these incredible old school, Jedi, bio hacking tricks. So he really brings together eastern wisdom and modern bio hacking. We will talk about how Pedram sees my theory about the four roots causes of cravings and his perspectives as an eastern, medical expert. Today’s show is all about pleasure and pleasure impact on our body, on our energy and on our metabolism. We are raised in this culture to think that pleasure is bad or suspect. Or anything that is pleasurable must be wrong for us or that you only deserve pleasure when we reach a goal. Pleasure is something that we allow ourselves when we are good enough in some way. But usually that “good enough” is based on somebody else’s metrics. Somebody else’s idea of what we should be like. It’s rarely based on just pure pleasure. The pleasure of being alive. Well I have some science and a great interview to shed a different light on pleasure and that pleasure maybe for its own sake may be good and honorable and it maybe the path to health, the path to a new relationship with your body and with food.

One of the beautiful women profiled in the incredible documentary “Advance Style”. I am going to be talking to Debra about aging, vitality, personal style and how she has partially created this international movement “Advanced Style”. Not only is she an incredible healer she is an amazing artist!

I have been prescribing the movie she was featured in, “Advanced Style” in my cravings cleanse and mindset makeover program, which starts at the end of January. We start on January 27th. It’s a two-month live coaching program with me and a growing group of some awesome ladies and a couple cool dudes who are interested, curious, ready, dedicated to looking at their cravings and desires, and finding a new way with food and their body. I want to take care of myself while still having fun but I’m not scared of aging out anymore.
